Carla FernaĢndez is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice connects social research, artistic creation, and cultural management. With a background in Fine Arts and a degree in Audiovisual Communication, she employs photography, documentary and video essay to examine social dynamics, history, and notions of territory. Her work has been developed through prominent residency and project development programs, including Matadero Madrid (2018), Mediapro Labs (2019), and CANNESERIES Unlimited (2020). She is currently participating in an artistic exchange between the Centro de Arte La Regenta (Gran Canaria) and Space Bv. In this exhibition, I embrace a fragment of Korean history, holding dear the stories of those who left to secure a better future for their families. Gran Canaria and Busan lie 18,700 kilometers apart. This project, inspired by the collective memory of the Korean diaspora in the Canary Islands, presents a living archive where recollections, oral histories, and everyday gestures become acts of cultural preservation. Spanning these distant shores, the project investigates not through nostalgia but via the richness of hybridity, where everyday geographies turn into safe places. I ask how oneā€™s life can root in a new land without forgetting its origin. En homenaje a la llegada de la comunidad coreana a Canarias, que este anĢƒo cumple su 60Āŗ aniversario, explorareĢ sobre los recuerdos a traveĢs de un viaje visual inspirado en la memoria colectiva de las nuevas generaciones coreano-canarias. '18,700km' is a research and artistic creation project that stems from a question: How is cultural heritage preserved when the physical connection to the country of origin has faded? In homage to the arrival of the Korean community in the Canary Islands, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, I will explore memories through a visual journey inspired by the collective memory of the new generations of Korean-Canarians.
