Haven't posted in a good while, wanna get back into it because I have so many cool photos in the backlog now. Here's something cool, one of the widest firs in California. Me and John stumbled across this one in May. It might already be known but neither of us had heard of it before. Our measurement came in at over 9.5 feet in diameter! Besides its unusual width, I also really love all the character this thing has with the burls and different bark textures, as well as the epiphytes growing off it. Another cool thing is that this tree was still alive and seemingly healthy!!! Most large or wide douglas firs in California that I have seen are either dead or nearly dead, so seeing a lively one like this was good to see.

Some cool rare and uncommon plants I've come across recently. First is Lycopodium clavatum, a lycophyte that is pretty rare, especially in California. Today, lycophytes are commonly referred to as ferns or mosses, but they are actually neither and are their own thing, with the clade reaching as far back as the Silurian era, making them the 2nd oldest surviving lineages of land plants behind the bryophytes. Lycophytes also include some of the earliest trees, the famous Lepidodendrales of the Carboniferous and Permian. Also, for all the vivarium people that follow me, lycophytes include Selaginella and Huperzia. The second cool plants are some cedars, at least some of which were Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, the Port Orford cedar, but I didn't see any leaves from some of them. Port Orford cedars have a small range overall and are pretty uncommon in California specifically. I also think they just look pretty too, so it's always exciting to see some.

It's been quite a while since I last posted anything. A lot has happened in that time, and I've been kept pretty busy with my classes, especially chem. But I've still been getting out to the forest with John seeing some amazing trees, we've found a couple so far that are, to our knowledge, new, which is always pretty cool. But I thought I'd post some of my favorite pictures I've taken since I've been back up here for this school year. I've been trying to improve my photography by using different compositions and angles regarding the trees, like standing really far back and incorperating the surrounding landscape, or getting up high on a log or hill if possible and getting a cool angle on the trunk with less of an upward perspective like you'd have from looking up from the ground. I'm gonna try and start posting more often again, I wanna start posting some of my plants that I keep in addition to the tree pictures. Hope everyone enjoys these pictures and trees!

This hillside redwood has one of the most impressive fire caves I know of. The hole lower trunk is pretty much hollow and would make a C shape in cross section; and the opening is really wide, so you can see the whole cave. The cave also extends really far up the trunk. When approaching the tree, there are no signs of the huge hollow. You have no idea until you are walking around the trunk and it hits you. It almost looks like a completely different tree. On the unburnt side, there is a pretty cool drooping burl that has begun fusing with the main trunk at a point near the bottom of the burl where it touches the trunk. Out of this burl grows two small stems.

Some cool plants from my last time in the forest. Western skunk cabbage, Lycopodium, and Western wild ginger.
The trees aren't the only thing that are so large around here. The Western skunk cabbage can also get really big. An interesting thing about them is that, besides several species of duckweeds, they're the only native species of aroid in California. If you ever see them in flower they have a very classic aroid inflorescense with a spadix and spathe.
I also saw some Lycopodium clavatum which was super cool. It has a rank of 4.1 meaning it has a limited distribution and is seriously threatened in California.
Lastly, I saw a couple Western wild gingers had started blooming. I love these plants because they remind me a lot of orchid flowers. There was also a banana slug right next to one of them. Their flowers are produced on the ground which makes me think their pollinators are small ground dwelling animals.
