My best buddy turned five last week. I often tell him how proud I am of him. He asks, “Why?” I tell him for how kind he is to people, how curious and friendly and adventurous he is, how he loves to dance, and paint, and draw, and play music and read books. How he lights up people around him. It’s such a life-giving thing to witness the person he is continue to emerge. To be able to laugh with him now, have greater conversations on more topics… as I say, it’s all been good, and it keeps getting better. Love you forever Sonny. by @casewoj

In April, DWR ran the idea by @canyoncoffee of opening a pop-up café at their Chicago store in West Loop for Design Days, starting June 8. While a little crazy, it was just enough time to conceivably pull it off — roughly 5 weeks. What struck me the most in pulling this off, and honestly what made it so fun, was the team we assembled and how solid every single person executed. It was a rise-to-the-occasion moment for everyone involved, and everyone delivered. Across the Canyon team, DWR, and folks on the ground in Chicago who really brought it all together — @coraevanlambert @_gallagher_ @maxdavis3 @andrewsilaghi the @espressoservices team — I’m really proud of all the hands that touched this project and brought it to life, and grateful to have had an excuse to meet and work with everyone. And finally, I’m proud of all the Canyon team who weren’t on this project yet have continued to hold it down in the midst of opening Brooklyn and now this. To keep everything humming as a small team while half the leadership is swept up in opening cafes (and all that goes with that) is no small feat. // Open for Design Days, the cafe opens to the public Thursday June 9th. Well, the world keeps getting crazier. But meanwhile on a corner in Prospect Heights, we opened our second Canyon café and life goes on. In dark times, the need for community spaces and warm interactions only grows stronger. Couldn’t be more proud of our teams — in NY and CA — who are holding it down, and amazed at the welcome response from the neighborhood. Thanks to my Chicago brother @andrewsilaghi for capturing some of the action in our opening days. by @casewoj

This place always restores me. The drive — so much of the destination — is worth it even for one night under the redwoods. Over the years I’ve slept in tents, cars, cabins, homes, vans, hotels… it doesn’t matter. So long as I have my coffee in the morning, a walk in the forest, a gander at some falls, a descent down to the sea. A visit to Henry Miller is always a bonus, as are pastries & coffee from The Village, breakfast at Deetjen’s, dinner at Nepenthe or Solstice. Every year I wind up giving an impromptu little speech at our holiday party. Maybe I’ll plan better next year. But what always comes out, genuinely, is how grateful and proud we are for the people who have made Canyon into what it is to today. These people don’t just work hard, they do it with care, integrity and warmth. I feel lucky that we’ve been a place for people to stay and grow; to have opportunities for people to learn new things and find themselves doing work or holding down responsibilities they might never have even foreseen for themselves. That’s been true for myself, and I love seeing that cycle continue now for people on our team. The opportunity, in turn, is really only made possible because of the care, support and business of people who trust Canyon and the products we bring to life. It’s been a journey since day 1, but I must say, these days — since the cafe opened, since we completed our own roastery, and as we look towards opening more cafes, creating the possibility of providing community for more neighborhoods, meeting more people — are better :) // thank you @woonkitchen for hosting our party! by @casewoj

A few photos from my night with Common Wave. A special night, listening to records together on such an incredible set up. It feels truly meditative getting to hear recordings through the quality of equipment they have, and I highly recommend attending one of their upcoming sessions. For this one, I felt lucky and humbled to be asked to curate the sounds of the night. I based my set on genres and particular tracks/bands that colored certain periods of my life, and some pivotal moments. From being exposed to indigenous South American music by street performers in Anchorage as a kid, to a WU LYF track that played as the sun was rising over central Kansas on my red eye drive when I left Minnesota for what was supposed to be a short term job in LA. Thank you to all the friends and community that showed up, to @commonwave_hifi for having me and @jason._.flynn for shooting 📸 taken in Common Wave by @casewoj
