Walnuts. I like them and I like the Walnut tree a couple gardens up - it even keeps propagating year after year in our garden. This prodigious tree was in my mind while making the walnut-based Fesenjan - a Persian stew with chicken. It is sweet and sour with walnuts toasted and mushed up, pomegranate molasses, cinnamon, saffron, and turmeric going on. It tastes a bit muddy but I like it. Sadly, the young’un didn’t 😕

A bit of a surprise for a lovely group of visitors yesterday looking at and talking together about bookbinding. Amongst the hundreds-of-years-old bindings in all their variety, craft, and preservation: this is decidedly one of my favourite book coverings. 🦶🏾

A sunflower- bush?! Quite unusual looking. It’s the traffic cone as sets them off in their full glory. 🌻

Today in 1940, the philosopher, literary critic, and essayist Walter Benjamin died by suicide in the Spanish border town of Portbou whilst on the run from the Nazis. Years ago I read this stunningly emotional novel ‘The Angel of History’ by Bruno Arpaia. It tells the story of one of the many refugees / exiles fleeing Nazi Germany. It reminded me of Erich Maria Remarque’s amazing (and underrated) ‘refugee’ novels on this theme. So sad, Benjamin’s harrowing plight. And here we are, once more.

Cambridge. A quite beautiful many-headed monster of a place to get to know more. Privileged to attend a super interesting conference, meeting and yarning with some formidable people and being inspired and sustained by the great community of rare books and special collections library workers. The Wellcome’s collaboration with ‘Heart and Soul’ which does truly awesome work with people with learning disabilities and autism struck me straight through the heart - helping people become ‘library people’ 🖤. Another highlight for my heart was hearing tale told of how an Ethiopian Holy person responded to a question about where a looted sacred book (now at the V&A) belongs and where it should be: “it belongs in the hands of whoever wants to hold it” 🫨 so humble and such a wise outlook on heritage, ownership, meaning, and impact. Before I get too self-righteous and pure, I should confess a new early modern ‘crush’: Grace Pierrepont, one hell of a book woman! I also want to pick up The Devonshire pub off Mill Road and move it to CT11.
