“The main character is not on a journey of self-discovery, she knows herself,” says @meriembennani.

Join LOVE behind the scenes of BOUCHRA with costume designer @thetrillestb and directors Meriem Bennani and @changeme2012.

In this animated auto-biography, we follow Bouchra, a 35-year-old Moroccan jackal and young filmmaker living in New York, as she navigates personal identity and a long-distance relationship with her mother in Casablanca.

Drawing on real-life conversations between Bennani and her mother, the film explores the social and cultural nuances of family, homosexuality, and the profound possibilities for love and understanding regardless of one’s identity.

BOUCHRA is showing at @luminorhdv and @legrandactioncinema in Paris from today, and @metrograph in NYC from June 26th.

Beautiful news! We’re so happy to share @tapecollective has acquired Morocco’s first animated feature, BOUCHRA, from @luckynumber_films.

The remarkable feature directorial debut from acclaimed visual artists Meriem Bennani (@meriembennani) and Orian Barki (@changeme2012), best known together for their 2020 web series #2Lizards, BOUCHRA marks an adventurous expansion of their collaborative practice into feature filmmaking.

Bouchra (35), is a queer Moroccan coyote and artist, juggling her life in New York and her family in Morocco, in the process of finishing the script for her autobiographical film, she unearths unreconciled conflicts and pursues new romances.

Produced by @fondazioneprada and @2lizardsproduction BOUCHRA premiered at @tiff_net 2025, where it became the first animated film nominated for the Platform Prize, and has since screened at @thenyff and @chifilmfest where it won the Gold Q-Hugo prize in the OutLook programme.

Our exclusive trailer and poster premiere for Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki's #Bouchra presents an acclaimed, personal hybrid animation.

Watch at the link in bio ahead of a June 26 release beginning at @metrograph from @filmmovement.

Here's the synopsis: "Wrestling with writer’s block for her first film, Bouchra, a queer Moroccan jackal living in NYC, starts having difficult yet overdue phone calls with her mother in Casablanca that begin influencing the project. Balancing the precarity of working as an artist in New York, the rift in her identity between her two homes and an array of friendships and romantic interests, Bouchra’s emotional reckoning with her mother and herself becomes her path to expression." taken in Metrograph by @changeme2012
