A not-so-tiny eulogy…

Yesterday we said goodbye to @deathbecomesher on Broadway but “she won’t go quietly, or be ignored”! Going out in my funeral best to watch our last audience standing O for nearly every number, and our cast, designers, crew, and staff hug and kiss and cry and then absolutely tear up the Lunt-Fontanne in their own respective ways… was magical.

What a thrill this whole journey has been. Being pulled to Chicago unexpectedly, getting to build an epic drag fight - complete with titty slap and beheading (shout out to @samgrew1 — we did it!!! #IYKYK), collaborating with some of the biggest talents and biggest hearts in the business… I am endlessly lucky to have been given the opportunity to slap (get it?) my name on this big beautiful baudy brash bodacious Broadway show. My endless thanks to @lowe.cunningham and @goldbergmarcia and @cgattelli (and team!) and @juliamat and @beherenoel for giving me your trust and space to play from the jump, to @kevinjzak and @jesserobbchoreography for getting my name in that room, to @meganhilty and @thejennifersimard and @christopher_sieber and @waryang and @neilhaskell for bringing honesty and humor and heart to the building of these fights from the ground up, to EVERY swing and replacement for yes and-ing that crazy choreo, to @ryworsing for being everything to me behind the scenes as a literal fight captain to the stars, and to every single person who has touched, slapped, punched, gargled, and grand jete-d through this show, both on stage and off… I am forever in awe of you all.

I do have to end this with an extra special thanks to @michellewilliams for being the first person to say hello to me when I landed at the Cadillac Palace Theater in Chicago, terrified but ready, who immediately made me feel like a beloved part of the company. I swear we’ll work together again, in a show where I can really get you fighting 😈

Honored and overwhelmed to be recognized on a list like this, among such exceptional theatre makers. As a nerdy and ambitious kid I always said I didn’t want to be famous, but I did want to be *renowned*, respected by my peers, in whatever field I ended up in. ✨ Obligatory 2025-in-Moments ✨

This was easily the hardest year of my life so far (and I’ve had some HARD years in recent memory) so I definitely thought a carousel like this would be depressing… but I’m fond of saying Grief and Joy are sisters and often arrive hand in hand, and 2025 was proof of that. I felt like I spent most of this year in bed and in tears from pain and fear and frustration, but as I picked through my options for this post I was surprised at how often I was *smiling* 🥹

So here’s a toast to a soft departure from this year and a soft arrival into the next, and a little more pleasure than pain this go around the sun ☀️🥂🕯️ by @chaofalltrades

Cha Ramos (she/ella) is a Drama Desk Award winning fight director (Water for Elephants), industry leading intimacy director, dramaturg, playwright, and performer, with an MFA in theatre from Columbia University. She’s as likely to be found in Broadway rehearsal rooms, as on Renaissance Faire stages, as in a comfy chair writing or reading a new play. She has shared her thoughts on staged violence and intimacy on local, national, and international panels, in classrooms and workshops, for HowlRound and the New Yorker, and in three different books (The Intimacy Coordinator’s Guidebook, Dramaturgy of Sex on Stage in Contemporary Theatre, & Supporting Staged Intimacy). Her work can currently be seen on Broadway in the hit new musical comedy Death Becomes Her (fight direction) and the beloved fan favorite &Juliet (intimacy direction).

respair, n. | a word gone out of fashion meaning both the rapid and active snatching of hope from the jaws of despair; a gift from @morganjenness

the first part of 2025 has been a time of deep respair
of fighting for my body, my heart, my experience
of getting into communion with my literal lifeblood (and the 3 units of other people’s lifeblood that saved me in January🩸)
of walking the walk of rest and boundaries and authenticity in art-making and life
of asking for help (@metalwill : the MVP of caretaking in our first year of marriage 🙃)
of trusting in survival and community and many possible futures

I spent the last week helping @fightladytonya, @jon.ezra.rubin, and @chaofalltrades teach the Fight Director Training Workshop in Washington, DC. Fifteen fight directors from across the country came to challenge themselves and learn from each other, while working through specialty topics by Tonya, Jon, and Cha alongside guests @preferredarms and Jenny Male: Dramaturgy, mass battles, preparing fight captains, contracts, negotiations, and an onslaught of choreographic curve balls.

Any fight directors looking to improve their skills, learn new perspectives, and experience community should consider attending next year's workshop March 5th-9th, 2026!
