I am holding a lot, you’re holding a lot. Probably more than you can carry alone. Women (especially millenial women) are taught that self-reliance is the goal. Can you do EVERYTHING without help? Gold star. But I don’t believe that’s the way God sees us. I think he intentionally gives us more than we can handle so that he can step in when needed and surprise us.

Realizing God actually just wants us to stop trying to carry the heavy stuff by ourselves completely changes how the day feels. It takes off so much pressure, which I think most of us could use today. 🤍

I used to think the assignment after becoming a mother was to show everyone, maybe even myself, that I was still who I’d always been. Unaltered. Untouched. Still “me". But you can’t ask a butterfly to crawl back into its cocoon.

Motherhood isn’t an intermission. It’s a reorganization.

The version of you that existed before is not the version standing here now. You don’t go back. You integrate. You expand. You grow into someone new.

And that person deserves to be met where she is, not measured against who she used to be. 🤍

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from waiting for news that could change your life. The pregnancy test. The bloodwork. The scan. The pathology report. The phone call you've been hoping for (or dreading).

And what's strange about waiting is how ordinary life continues around it. You make lunches. Answer emails. Pick up dry cleaning. Ask your kids about their day. And somewhere underneath all of it, you're waiting to find out which version of your life you're walking into.

I've spent a lot of this past year in that in-between place. And I think one of the hardest parts is how much energy it takes to hold two possible futures in your head at once. To keep making plans while knowing everything could change. To let yourself hope without getting too attached to what you're hoping for.

We talk a lot about patience, about trusting the timing, about learning to be present. But I think sometimes we forget that waiting is not passive. It asks an enormous amount of us. And maybe we don't always need someone to tell us that everything will work out.

Sometimes we just need someone to acknowledge how hard it is to keep living in the middle of a question you can't answer yet.

And because music has a way of meeting us in places words sometimes can't, I put together a little playlist for the waiting seasons. Songs that have kept me company when I didn't have answers, but needed something to hold onto.

Comment WAIT and I'll send it your way 🤍

We spend nine months watching a baby grow and somehow expect the mother to arrive fully formed on the same day.
⠀
But she’s in a gestational period too — still learning her baby, still learning herself, still allowed to not recognize who she’s becoming yet.

A few little (what I call) "sips of self care" in the morning make a big difference in how I feel the rest of the day. Nothing time-consuming, just small things that help me feel taken care of in the middle of taking care of everyone else.

These are a few of my two minute nonnegotiable lately, including my daily @we_natal prenatals, which are the only ones I've ever taken that don't make me feel queasy afterwards.

Postpartum research keeps telling us that having a village matters, but there’s a quieter finding that changes everything.
⠀
It’s not whether the support exists. It’s whether she can actually reach for it without guilt, without explaining herself, without managing everyone around her first.

We’ve gotten so focused on protecting ourselves from what might happen that we forget we’re allowed to celebrate what is happening.

Six weeks pregnant is still pregnant. You don’t have to earn your excitement by making it to a certain week.

The women in the Bible who waited the longest for babies weren’t peaceful about it. Sarah laughed in sarcasm, Rachel was angry, Hannah wept, and not one of them was asked to pretend it wasn’t hard.
⠀
Maybe that’s the part I need right now. That bringing the grief, the jealousy, the doubt - all of it - is not a failure of faith. When we are in the depths of the valley, that’s where faith often appears to walk us back to the mountain top.

I keep thinking about how much we ask of women while they are pregnant. Your body is building a human being...... from scratch. A new organ. A brain. A nervous system. A heart that begins beating inside of you. Your blood volume increases. Your organs literally shift to make room.

Your body is doing an enormous amount of work every second of every day, even when you are sitting completely still. And yet, life just… continues.

You answer the emails. Make the dinner. Get the Sit through the meeting. Remember the birthday gift. Keep everyone and everything moving. It’s Tuesday, after all.

There is something wild about one of the most physically demanding things a body can do happening almost invisibly while the world carries on as though nothing particularly extraordinary is taking place.

And then, almost the moment it’s over, we start talking about “bouncing back.”

Back to what, exactly?

Back to the body you had before it grew another person? Back to the woman you were before you carried them? Back to your old rhythms, your old capacity, your old definition of productive?

We spend nine months asking a woman’s body to expand, rearrange, soften, stretch and sustain another life - and then we seem to celebrate how quickly she can make it look like none of it ever happened.

But motherhood has never felt like a journey backward to me.

Maybe we could spend less time asking women to get back to who they were and a little more time honoring who they’ve become.

I guess if ya can't beat em, join em, right? 🙌

This man takes his @we_natal every. single. day. without fail 😂 which I actually love because fertility really is a two-person job, after all.

Nobody prepares you for how lonely infertility or secondary infertility feels, even when you’re surrounded by people who love you.

The silence isn’t because we’re alone.

It’s because shame keeps us from saying out loud what our bodies are going through, and that silence makes us feel broken in a way we were never meant to carry.
