💭 “Is chiropractic safe?” It’s one of the most common questions people ask when considering care for back or neck pain. ✅ Here's the evidence: ▪️Chiropractic treatment: serious side effects occur in 1 in 476,000 treatments (Chu et al., 2023). No strokes or cauda equina reported. ▪️Spinal surgery: 3–5 in 100 risk complications ▪️Opioids: up to 1 in 4 risk long-term dependence ▪️Paracetamol: limited benefit, 1–4 in 100 risk of liver stress 🔎 Chiropractors in the UK are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and complete years of training to ensure safe, evidence-based care. MSK conditions account for over 30 million lost working days in the UK each year. Yet, NHS MSK waiting lists remain long, sometimes up to 24 weeks. Our new report, launching today, examines how chiropractors could help bridge the gap, reducing waiting times and supporting faster return to work. With the potential to generate up to £1 billion in productivity gains, the evidence is clear: it’s time for change. The impact of MSK conditions on the UK workforce is undeniable. Patients are waiting between 11 and 24 weeks for treatment, resulting in longer absences from work and worsening health outcomes. There is a proven solution. Research shows that chiropractic care reduces disability recurrence and improves return-to-work outcomes. By integrating chiropractors into NHS MSK pathways, we can increase access to treatment without adding pressure to already stretched NHS services. With 28,000 weekly chiropractic appointments currently available, utilising this workforce could significantly reduce waiting times and drive economic recovery. 🏛️ On 13 October, our Vice President, Faye Deane, represented the BCA at ARMA’s parliamentary event marking Bone and Joint Week. The event brought together a wide range of organisations and healthcare professionals, highlighting the breadth of expertise across the UK’s musculoskeletal (MSK) workforce and the shared commitment to improving patient care. With growing demand for MSK services, there is a significant opportunity to better utilise the skills and capacity of healthcare professionals, including chiropractors, to improve access to timely treatment, support earlier intervention and ease pressure on NHS services. It was fantastic to see so many organisations united in recognising the importance of MSK health and the opportunities for greater collaboration across the sector. Today is #AHPDay, an annual and much-deserved celebration of the Allied Health Professions, the third largest clinical workforce within the NHS. AHPs play a vital role in helping people prevent, manage and recover from health conditions, delivering care across a wide range of settings. For us, AHP Day provides an opportunity to discuss an important question: what could AHP recognition mean for chiropractic, and why does it matter? Last week, chiropractors at all stages of their careers came together for our Leadership in Action event, and what a great day it was! The event was packed with conversations and connections, as well as challenging each others' ideas and perspectives. Thank you to everyone who showed up and got involved. The support and energy showed how committed chiropractors are to their profession and continued learning. Are we talking enough about health span, not just lifespan? Many patients want to stay active, independent and able to do the things they enjoy for as long as possible. That's why healthy ageing isn't simply about adding years to life. It's about making those years healthier and more fulfilling. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, strength and bone density, increasing the risk of falls, fractures and reduced independence. But regular movement can help protect against that decline. One of the key takeaways from this article is that there is no single "perfect" exercise. Strength training, aerobic activity, balance work and everyday movement all have a role to play.
