The internet is ruthless when it comes to flubbing a scene in any image or video. They WILL notice, and they WILL call it out. It’s embarrassing for the photographer, the crew, and any brands involved. Generally speaking, it can be a death knell for a campaign or even an entire brand. Fortunately, there are easy ways to make sure that what your shooting is set up for success and building your scene properly is the biggest one. I touch on some of my thought process and considerations when it comes to scene building in photography in my latest and final episode of “Inside ‘Out There’” with my friends @sonyalpha. You can now view the full 6 part series on YouTube. Enjoy. by @chrisburkard

Sun rays blasted through the tall Sitka spruce & shore pine in Florence Oregon as we loaded our rafts to kick off day five of the Oregon Coast Trail. We were joined by heaps of seals as we paddled the Siuslaw River toward the south jetty & Oregon Dunes. The beauty of this crossing shot morale through the roof. The Oregon Dunes OHV area is capped by the Siuslaw on the north and the Umpqua on the south, forming an almost whale tail-esque geography, which meant we didn’t see town or road for two river crossings.

For the Umpqua, we got lucky with a hiker/ biker ferry. We restocked food in Winchester Bay & continued south, into the fog, on a long stretch of isolated beach that would spit us out at the mouth of the Coos River & the massive Coo’s Bay. We paddled once again before rolling into Sunset Bay State Park at dusk & made camp in the beautiful yurts, that are housed at the campground there.

The morning featured a carb load at a local cafe & resupply since racoons got into some of our food overnight. Then, we pinned it south to Bandon! With a gusty paddle across the Coquille River, we landed in the sunny, busy town of downtown Bandon, grabbed great coffee & lunch and road south with the wind at our backs through the Lord of the Rings like sea stacks on the Bandon Beach. It was another beautiful moment on par with the sun rays from the morning prior, though a whole lot more moody with the fog rolling back in. 20 miles south through dropping temps and worsening fog, we reached Floras Lake and decided to call it a day. The soft sand was relentless on this stretch & we were starting to feel the wear and tear on our bikes and bodies. With two days to go, we were feeling good about our mileage and looked forward to the morning ride through Cape Blanco instead of doing it in the fog & dark.

I'm offering a 1 day workshop in Laguna Beach this Sunday, October 18th. Field workshops are great, but I run classroom-based occasionally workshops because it allows me to engage more thoroughly with both subject-matter and you all who come to learn. I'll be going over some of the most important lessons I've taken away from my years as a professional photographer - everything from building a brand to best practices and working with clients, as well as shooting and photo-theory. Spots are filling up so be sure to grab your place now!

This workshop caps off an incredible weekend with @coastfilmfestival where I’ll be screening my film “Searching For SuperCrust” and speaking alongside the likes of John John Florence and other incredible athletes and artists. You can find tickets and details for all their excellent events on their page by @chrisburkard

Day 4 on the Oregon Coast Trail kicked off with a misty bridge crossing in dense fog as we crossed the Yaquina River departing Newport. This was one of the only bridges on our route due to the long jetty rocks and lack safe beach exits for our rafts. For the next 50 miles we reveled in relatively pleasant weather and good riding too. We paddled across the Alsea Bay with fairly calm water. The whole crew then stopped at an epic little bike co-op in Waldport to rinse the sand and salt corroded gear before continuing down the beach to the volcanic reefs above Yachats. In town, we stopped at one of the best coffee shops on the whole trip and soaked in some sun and the view south before continuing on till nightfall.

We crashed for the night at a campsite near Florence OR, marking the 200 mile point of our journey from Astoria to Brookings…. almost the exact midpoint. Spirits were still high even though the legs felt heavy. Still a lot of coast left to go.

I’m screening my latest film “Searching For SuperCrust” in Bentonville Arkansas this Thursday October 15th! I’ll be riding OZ Trails Bikepark and then hosting a great evening there. I’ll present the film, give a bit of behind the scenes and time for Q&A then be around to mingle and sign books and prints. Some tickets are still available so grab them now! You can go to searchingforsupercrust.com or just click the link on my page.

This is a collection of a few more intimate and striking frames from the film. As we traversed Vatnajokull not everything was captured as stills, so these only were revealed as we started going through the footage itself. taken in Bentonville, Arkansas by @chrisburkard

Day 3 of Fat biking & Pack rafting down the Oregon Coast Trail started in a thick fog with some hard high-tide pedaling. Crossing the Nestucca was choppy and pretty intense with the wind and being unable to see the other side. But after the first river crossing the tide began to retreat revealing nice firm sand for riding and a hint of sun through the clouds. By the time we reached Lincoln City it was bright and beautiful. We got a whole lot of excited questions and curious looks from the fisherman when we started blowing up our rafts and prepping to paddle the Siletz River. The fog returned later in the day but was a lot spottier and getting some rad riding through the woods made up for it. We ended the day warming up with fish, chips, and chowder at Mo’s in Lincoln City which felt very appropriate for another excellent day on the Oregon Coast. ~150 miles down and 219 to go! taken in Oregon by @chrisburkard

Oregon Coast Trail … by bike. Days 1&2 we travelled ~100 miles from Astoria to Tierra Del Mar. Despite a flat tire within the first 5 minutes, the start of our journey down the Oregon Coast has been even more wild than expected. We paddled by Packraft & ferries across a few beautiful rivers, some felt intense & remote, others were comfortably close to some cozy beach cabins. We’ve taken hiker ferry services across a few busier harbors. The people we’ve met have been amazing. Friendly and helpful, most of them very stoked on the crab & salmon season they’re having. The tides though have presented some challenges. With some bigger and more remote crossings to come, this impact will likely be intensified by the 8.0 ft tides on the forecast. But it looks like we have a pretty clear weather window ahead and are feeling good for the next 264 miles!

Arguably the best show on earth, and it's not even on earth.
Shot in Death Valley's Mesquite Dunes on assignment for @natgeo in 2023 for their 'Ultimate Guide to the National Parks'. My team toured 3 national parks to capture them in all their beauty - park 3/3 was Death Valley.

This image and others are available as prints, in any size and style you can imagine, on my store. Order now to get ahead on your holiday gifts!

Alongside 3 friends, I’m setting out to Fatbike and Packraft all 363 miles of The People’s Coast. The Oregon coast earned this moniker when it was declared in state code that every inch of the 363 mile coastline is legally public land - available and open for everyone to enjoy for free. Over the coming 7 days or so @kait.boyle , @kurt.refsnider , @miron_golfman and I will get to enjoy that access. With our pack rafts strapped to our fat bikes, we’ll peddle the beaches and paddle the river mouths, getting to intimately enjoy the incredible wilderness and beauty of this place. It’s a trip I’ve been dreaming of for years and I couldn’t be more stoked to finally quest off into the sand, surf, and sun.

I’m so stoked to be returning to one of the most striking coastlines in the world this week. Not Iceland, not Chile, or even Alaska - Oregon. Lush temperate rainforests cascading into secluded coves. Windblown sitka leaning stoically over sea-battered cliffs, filling the air with scents of salt and spruce. Looming basalt towers standing high above the surf, monuments to an intense volcanic history. Wide sandy beaches that run uninterrupted for miles, all with public access sanctified in state code. It’s the kind of place that adventure is made of. Every trip I’ve made over the years has left my cup full - fueling my desire to come back, do more, see more, and spend more time appreciating how special that 363 mile long coastline really is.
Fortunately, my latest project will grant me ample time for appreciation as me and some friends attempt to ride this entire coastline on fat bikes. Stay tuned for all that in the coming weeks🫡 taken in Oregon by @chrisburkard

Better judgement might’ve had us turning around when the mud got half a foot deep. It might’ve had us reconsidering things when we realized there were already 7 people bivying in the 6 person hut we had been counting on. But better judgement doesn’t get you to dogtown. It doesn’t get you to the 80m tall tongue of the Greenland Ice Cap or down Greenland’s Ice to Coast route and back. For that, you just have to go. Against Better Judgement @rapha
