Excited to be hosting this phenomenal symposium TOMORROW at the Grolier Club in NYC celebrating 50 years of creative collaboration at Dieu Donné with Susan Gosin, co-founder of Dieu Donné. I am so honored to have curated the exhibition at the Grolier Club with Susan, “Pioneers in Hand Papermaking: 50 Years of Innovation at Dieu Donné” on view through November 28.

Thanks to all the faculty and students who attended the opening reception last Thursday for the exhibition I curated in recognition of the semiquincentennial titled “About America: Liberty, Legacy, and Loyalty at 250” at Columbus State University’s Illges Gallery.

And thanks to all those who attended my curatorial talk on Friday- I loved meeting so many engaged students!

Poignant— and timely in response to continuing shared realities and profound global struggles— About America: Liberty, Legacy, and Loyalty at 250 contemplates the complex and often subtle relationship between the past and present, prosperity and adversity, presence and absence, civility and disregard. Utilizing seemingly simplistic imagery and a sparse color palette as visual platforms, the contemporary artists featured in this exhibition consider and question the meaning of and iconography
associated with American Nationhood. Through these diverse artistic examinations, the exhibition slowly reveals how awareness and misconception can both abstract and define visual narratives, prompting viewers to [re]consider how we remember our histories, comprehend our current world, and define our futures. While this exhibition commemorates the United States’ semi quincentennial, it also provides an opportunity for thoughtful reflection and reminds us of our shared humanity— even during periods of civic adversity. Moreover, this exhibition and associated programming demonstrate the capacity of the academic arena to act as a catalyst for increasing public awareness and appreciation of the essential role visual arts play in interpreting our world, collective histories, and contemporary events.
