Big Congratulations to artist DAVID E. PETERSON 👏🏽👏🏽

We are thrilled to announce Peterson’s participation in “Collective Geometries”, the current exhibition at the Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art @zuckermanmuseum at Kennesaw State University.

The exhibition includes artists: Eliza Bentz, Bojana Ginn, Marc Mitchell, David Norvos, Ato Ribeiro, Jonathan VanDyke, Dan Walsh and Dyani White Hawk.

What an incredible, moving experience at the Grolier Club in NYC, celebrating 50 years of Dieu Donné’s extraordinary contributions to handmade paper and book arts.

To hear from so many artists I have admired for decades—artists whose work has inspired and guided me throughout my own journey as a maker—felt almost surreal. I’m still dreaming, still giddy, like a five-year-old on Christmas morning. ✨

Highlights included being part of Ann Hamilton’s performance; meeting Polly Apfelbaum and Howardena Pindell; hearing Michele Oka Doner speak about gathering; reflecting on the beautiful collaborations between artists, writers, and master makers; and experiencing the incredible exhibition curated by Susan Gosin and Cynthia Nourse Thompson.

Thank you, Cynthia, for inviting me to be part of such a meaningful and inspiring gathering. I feel deeply honored to have shared this experience with so many extraordinary makers. Leaving with a full heart, a renewed sense of wonder, and so much inspiration. 💛

“What It Is, What It Has Been (George Washington)” sits alone on a floating wall at the entrance to the Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery at Columbus State University. Its creator, Cuban artist Reynier Leyva Novo, began the piece with a 3D print modeled on Jean-Antoine Houdon’s 1786 portrait of Washington. Leyva Novo then covered his bust with 200 layers of white acrylic paint. A stop-motion video set into the pedestal shows each coat going on, until the founding father’s face is gone.

Curator Cynthia Nourse Thompson, a professor of art at Kennesaw State University’s Robert S. Geer Family College of the Arts, put it there on purpose.”

Utilizing seemingly simplistic imagery and a sparse color palette as visual platforms, the contemporary artists featured in this exhibition consider and question the meaning of and iconography
associated with American Nationhood.

Through these diverse artistic examinations, the exhibition slowly reveals how awareness and misconception can both abstract and define visual narratives, prompting viewers to [re]consider how we remember our histories, comprehend our current world, and define our futures. We had a terrific turnout for this year's 𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙀𝙍𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙀! ✨

𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙀𝙍𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙀 is an annual event, proudly hosted at the Zuckerman Museum of Art, that features engaging, cross-department collaboration by some of our very own Geer College of the Arts Faculty

⭐ This year, Marlon Burnley and Autumn Eckman performed amongst Cynthia Nourse Thompson's 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨, each responding to work by Ato Ribeiro and Jonathan VanDyke, respectively ⭐

Our Museum Preparator extraordinaire ⚡️ Greg Bell ⚡️and our student assistants have been hard at work installing our 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 and fall exhibition, 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 (curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson); which will be opening as part of 𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙀𝙍𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙀 next Tuesday, September 1st at 7pm!
