📖“LICENSED TROUBLESHOOTER -
The Guns of James Bond” w/ @headstamp ⬇️

Three years ago, a trip of a lifetime concluded.

I’m forever in the debt of those at Walther who made a trip to Germany possible. The finished product of by book, LICENSED TROUBLESHOOTER - THE GUNS OF JAMES BOND, is infinitely better thanks to what I captured and discovered in the Walther archives, and through hours of conversation with Wulf-Heinz Pflaumer, and everyone at his firm.

LICENSED TROUBLESHOOTER, I’m thrilled to say, is now shipping. New orders via Headstamp (linked in bio) will ship promptly. After years of research, writing, and some production hurdles, I couldn’t be happier with the end product.

If you’re a fan of the world of Bond, or small arms, or perhaps both - consider giving LICENSED TROUBLESHOOTER a go. My thanks again to Walther for adding so much to this tome! by @commandobond

Filming yesterday @rockislandauction preview day was both fun and jaw dropping. The amount of history up for auction today is staggering, and the people who make it happen could not be more hospitable, professional, and enthusiastic. Oh, and they are all Bond fans! Naturally. Today we will have coverage of the auction itself. Anybody recognize what Bond movie the sniper rifle on the table in front of us is from? (📸 courtesy of @commandobond ) by @commandobond

Suited & booted carry. A Beretta for the pocket, and a Colt close at hand.

Drawing inspiration from Fleming’s original vision for 007 here, with a skeleton gripped 1953 Beretta 418 in the inner left chest pocket - far better for a gun this size than the prescribed chamois shoulder holster, and a 1943 Colt Lend-Lease 1911 off-body in my bag.

Two excellent pieces of history.

The 1943 Lend-Lease Colt. One of the nicest service 1911’s I’ve had the pleasure to handle, and one I’m very proud to own and carry.

Some of my favorite details.

This is my Shepherd’s navy single breasted suit, cut from Dugdale Bros cloth with an English inspired conduit cut. Massive fan of the roped sleeve heads and hacking pockets.

Shirting is also Shepherd’s, from a Thomas Mason cloth with cocktail cuffs. Worn with the Fleming uniform black silk knit tie, a piece that I’ve found to be one of my favorites and stalwart companions.

I love this suit.

Finished here with the eBay steal of the century, bench-made Crockett & Jones shoes, shipped for $50 and all but new. by @commandobond

The Walther P99 - a hand-delivered 00 icon. One that saved the company.
—
The year is 1993. The historic small arms manufacturer, Carl Walther GmbH is doing everything in its power to remain alive. For the first time ever, the company is for sale. Soon, it will no longer be majority held by a member of Carl Walther’s bloodline.

The sale, while not ideal, is the final move left on the board.

It became clear to leadership that it was time to sell, for if they did wait any longer, they’d essentially have an empty building and a blue banner to offer.

Enter Steyr. The Austrian firearms manufacturer, who will forever be known for their AUG platform, was quite ready to secure the German firm. And made it known that a deal was to be made soon.

This news resonated rather sourly with those proud of Germany’s heritage as a small arms manufacturer. This spurred another player into action, Umarex. This air gun manufacturer, at the direction of Wulf-Heinz Pflaumer and his partner Franz Wonisch, insisted on keeping this German company home where it belonged. It emerged victorious. I had the honor of visiting Walther in Germany a few years ago now while researching Licensed Troubleshooter, and learned so much about this history directly from Pflaumer, who told me that his feelings at the time were, “It can’t be that such a traditional enterprise should simply be sold out of country!”

CONTINUED ➡️

This is the scene that set the stage for the P99.

The P99 was an entirely new concept for Walther, a company well known for its hammer-fired, steel-framed pistols. What’s more, this was again, at a time in which none of the traditionally designed Walther’s were successfully penetrating the market. It was time for a dramatic change.

In entering the striker-fired, polymer market, Walther knew that their pistol had to meet certain criteria, while also exceeding expectations.

The P99 undoubtedly accomplished both. After three years of research, the revolutionary Walther was introduced to the world at the 1996 IWA show. Built around the concept of “flexibility over uniformity,” the P99 was a pistol ready to be tailor made to the needs of the user.

This one rarely gets the love it deserves. The PPS M1 isn’t the prettiest Walther by a mile but it’s also one of the most consequential 9mm pistol designs of the last 20 years.

Pulling inspiration from both the P99 and PPK - taking the design/grip texture and paddle release from the former and the dimensions of the latter - Walther released the PPS as the first true slimline 9mm.

James Bond would carry a .40 S&W PPS in a Bullard leather pancake holster in CARTE BLANCHE, in conjunction with his 5.11 Tactical OD Green kit and Oakley sunglasses. Truly a time capsule, that novel. by @commandobond

“Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you. He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night.

The only thing clean on him is his weapon, and he made his web gear, He doesn’t worry about hat workout to do - his ruck weighs what it weighs, his runs end when the enemy stops chasing him.

The True Believer doesn’t care how hard it is; he only knows that he wins or he dies. He doesn’t go home at 1700; he is home. He knows only the cause.”

Jack Carr’s TRUE BELIEVER.

Season 2 of the TERMINAL LIST Prime Video adaptation is live October 21st - consider this your sign to crack open the cover of the 2nd James Reece novel in preparation.

While SAVAGE SON is my favorite of the first three book narrative arc, TRUE BELIEVER is one of the most important chapters in the series. It’s the novel in which James Reece finds a purpose and will to live once more after discovering he isn’t terminally ill, and finds the next chapter of his life after expecting nothing more.

It’s a powerful story of redemption that also sets Reece on the path that still drives the character now as we await book 8 - STATE OF EXILE.

The ArmaLite AR-7 is the definitive long gun of the 1960’s 007.

And, it’s even better suppressed (as it was on screen).

Carried as it ought to be in my Great Grandfather’s (a Naval Commander of WWII) briefcase. It’s just excellent. by @commandobond

A rare bird indeed - a Walther PPK Verchromt.

Manufactured in the pre-war era and finished in a matte hard chrome “Verchromt” these guns are doubly thrilling as these PPK’s were built with the duralumin frame.

Ultra light, 7,65mm excellence with a gorgeous and insanely durable finish and adorned with my favorite grips in mottled Bakelite. Someday I look forward to snagging one of these as a dedicated summer carry.

Until then, it’s just the one that got away. by @commandobond
