Battle of the Black Sea: Day 1...

On October 3rd, 1993 members of US Special Operations Task Force Ranger mobilized from their base at the rundown airport in Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission for the day was to capture high value targets critical to the Somali National Alliance and to the SNA’s warlord leader Mohammed Farrah Aidid.

The raid to capture the target individuals was planned to take one hour and required fast rope insertion of operators into the Black Sea neighborhood of Mogadishu. Once the area was secured a ground element convoy comprised of humvees and trucks would rendezvous to execute the exfil.

That was the plan.

It quickly went out the window when Somali militia swarmed the target area and downed a pair of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters designated Super Six One and Super Six Four using rocket propelled grenades (RPGs).
The raid turned into a rescue mission which saw the small contingent of US forces battling thousands of Somali militia in an effort to recover the crew of both helicopters deep in hostile territory.

Task Force Ranger was comprised of elements from the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR), the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), the Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron, the Army’s Intelligence Support Activity and the CIA.

Past conversations with various members of the task force, including Delta operator Brad Halling and LG (Ret.) William Boykin, have confirmed that the watch predominantly worn throughout the operation by US forces was the Casio DW-5000. To watch enthusiasts it’s the OG Casio G-Shock. It’s an iconic watch that initiated G-Shock’s now long-standing relationship with the U.S. Military.
