Meet Oscar and Tanya, the incredible duo behind digital art collective Compiler 👾

It was when Tanya was part of the @tatecollective Producer programme over a decade ago, that she saw how digital technologies could engage young people with arts and culture.

For Oscar, he was drawn to digital art when he realised it could bring together his interests from school - art, drawing, photography, computers and maths.

The two met while doing an MA in Digital Culture at @goldsmithsuol, with a shared interest in wanting to make technology feel accessible. And @compilerzone was born!

For their summer commission ‘Tracing Together’, they ran a series of community-led workshops where local people learnt how to encode their own personal journeys into a collective digital tapestry.

Compiler then brought this tapestry to life via LED screens, which you can see here at the Women’s Museum, Thursday-Saturday, 12-5pm 🖥️ Drop by before the exhibition closes on Sat 13 Dec!

We’re still on such a hype, and glad to now share the digital tapestry of some of the submissions for Tracing Together at the Creative Intelligence festival at @southbankcentre! 🧡💜

It was such an exciting, vibrant festival atmosphere to be part of in one of our favourite London buildings. Thank you to everyone who contributed their pixel drawings of meaningful places, people and things to the shared digital tapestry. From Morley’s, Catford, and Mitcham trams, to your pets, friends and favourite trees… 🏘️🌳🐾

Through Tracing Together, we’re interested in the process of slowing down and finding slower forms of connection and collective memory-making in a time of rapid and unstable digital acceleration and optimisation.

🔗 A selection of works is now viewable via the link in our bio → https://tracingtogether.compiler.zone/c-i/

Thanks again to @peckhamdigital, @bats1996, @planetary.act, the brilliant volunteers and everyone involved in making ‘Get Your Hands Dirty with Creative Tech’ happen! 🤩

We’re in full swing preparing for the 🧡 Creative Intelligence 💜 festival at @southbankcentre!

As part of @peckhamdigital’s programme (Get Your Hands-Dirty with Creative Tech), we’ll be presenting a version of our 🟦🟩 Tracing Together 🟥🟨 interactive installation from Friday 11 September to Sunday 13 September. On Sunday, we’ll also be running a drop-in workshop from 2-5pm.

Thank you @bats1996 for the invitation!

Developed through participatory workshops, Tracing Together transforms overlooked personal journeys and meaningful places into a shared digital tapestry. Using low-impact, low-resolution image-making techniques that trace back to the origins of cross-stitch embroidery, the work reflects on slower forms of connection and collective memory-making in a time of rapid and unstable digital acceleration.

Join us at the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer. It’s free! And check out all the amazing things happening across Southbank Centre that weekend. The line-up is great! 💫

Following on from our 🛜 Hyperlocal Hotspot Lab 🛜 workshops at @sladeschool Art+Tech earlier this year, two new texts reflecting on the project are now online.

Written by @lily.has, @siusoon and Koundinya Dhulipalla, the first looks at self-hosted infrastructure as an artistic and critical pedagogy, and reflects on the workshops as a space for collective learning, experimentation and “doing otherwise” with digital infrastructure.

The second is a conversation with us about local offline networks, DIY/DIWO approaches, troubleshooting, materiality of the internet and the possibilities of treating infrastructure as something that can be collectively questioned and reimagined.

Really lovely to see the conversations from the workshops continue in this form! 💙

Big thanks again to Lily, Winnie and Koundinya for the collaboration, writing and reflections.

📸 FESTIVAL THROWBACK: PHOTO FAKERY

Throwing it back to Peckham Digital Festival of Creative Computing 2025!

Last year, we joined digital art collective Compiler for Photo Fakery: a workshop exploring the blurry line between reality and non-reality in digital photography.

Participants experimented with AI-powered depth-of-field, point-cloud aesthetics and digital collage to create dreamlike images that questioned what we see, what we remember and what we consider “real”. 👀

Want more experimental hands-on workshops like this at Peckham Digital? 👀

We need your help to make it happen. We’re still fundraising for Peckham Digital Festival 2026, and every donation helps us bring more artists, workshops, performances and creative technology to our community.

💸 Donate if you can — link in bio

More workshops. More experiments. More creativity. ⚡

We’re revisiting one of our first artworks, Twin Pixel, and watching The Odyssey in two pixel resolution, just the way Christopher Nolan intended. 🟥🟦

Our Twin Pixel project was inspired by David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and live-streamed Episode 8 of Season 3 (2017) in just two-pixel resolution.

We were responding to David Lynch’s comment about watching films on smartphones: “You’ll think you have experienced it, but you’ll be cheated. It’s such a sadness…”

So we wanted to see what could be learned by re-presenting the episode at something close to its most reduced scale: in two-pixel resolution, with colour information reduced to the dominant hue of each side of the frame and sound reduced to the dominant frequency per frame.

🔍 Learn more about the process here or via the link in our bio (documented as part of ‘Vague but Exciting …’ exhibition at @vividprojectsuk in 2019) —> https://twinpixel.live/ by @compilerzone

🟧🟦🟩 Tracing Together 🟥🟪🟨 is now fully up and running at @eastburymanor, with the addition of all the new submissions from yesterday’s workshop!

Thank you to all the lovely participants who joined us to learn about low-resolution image-making and contribute to our growing installation on LED screens.

In its new location at Eastbury Manor House, Tracing Together reflects on the evolution of tapestry as a medium. Historically, Elizabethan tapestries would have hung in houses like Eastbury Manor, telling stories through woven images. Here, those traditions are reimagined through contemporary digital processes, creating a new kind of tapestry that maps the lived experiences of local communities.

🗓️ You can see the updated installation on Fridays 10am-4pm and Sundays 11am-4pm throughout the summer. There is also an interactive area where you can encode your own messages using the leaflets and see your artwork showcased as part of the installation too.

Fabrication and install: Lucy Woodhouse @lucy.woodhouse & Lex Franchi @lexxfranchi

Images 2-3: graphic design for the exhibition brochure by Claire Mason @shapethepage

Realised with the support of @thewomensmuseum team: Sophia Hinton-Lever @sophiahl & Diana Le @__dianale; and James Hodgson, Curator of Eastbury Manor House @nationaltrustlondon @lbbdcouncil.

We had a lovely time bringing our 🏞️Photo Fakery🌄 project back to @vamuseum the other week (where it first began for the V&A Friday Late: Is This for Real? curated by @carriechan_net last year).

This time, we adapted the workshop for ✨V&A Teacher Sanctuary In-person: AI, Creativity and Education✨ in collaboration with brilliant design and education practitioner @trudi_designedu.

During the session, we explored the intersection of AI, creativity and education, and visited the galleries to look at technical objects from the V&A collection. We then shared insights and initiated deeper discussions around critical and creative uses of AI in the classroom.

We used old photography magazines to create photography-inspired collages and experimented with our self-built Photo Fakery web app, with AI-assisted 3D depth effects, as well as some mainstream AI tools to explore our collages through different lenses.

It was also great to give a shoutout to the Ways of [Machine] Seeing resources for Art & Design teachers that @neyanoya has been working on with @csni_research (@lsbu), @maartedu (@ioelondon) and @thephotographersgallery. (Check it out here —> https://waysof.net/machine-seeing)

Join digital art collective @compilerzone , who are the artists behind the Tracing Together installation, for a hands-on drop-in workshop suitable for ages 5+.

You'll create unique, embroidery-inspired patterns reflecting on the things and places that are important to you in the local area.

Using 32x32 grid templates and a digital pixel art tool, we will encode places, stories, or feelings into a collective digital tapestry. Creations and outcomes from the workshop will become part of Tracing Together, a growing installation on LED screens here at Eastbury.

Workshop runs on Sunday 19 July 12-3pm, is FREE

You can book online via link in bio, or simply come on the day. by @compilerzone

🚌🧈👾🌈 Sharing some WIP 🍓🌳🌸🐕

Over the past few months, we’ve been working with @morrisgallery and a group of Waltham Forest Young Carers, creating collaborative artworks about their interests and connection to the borough.

Young Carers are young people aged 18 or under who provide unpaid care for a family member or friend with a long-term illness or condition. Every two weeks, a group meets as part of a Youth Club programme coordinated by Satvinder Bhatt and delivered by @projectzerowf.

In collaboration with @sarahval, we’ve been running a series of flexible, open-ended art sessions with a younger group aged 6-12, experimenting with plasticine sculpting for 3D scanning, digitally adapted hand-drawn pixel drawing and sticker printing.

We have been blown away by the thoughtful creations they have made and contributed to our online virtual environment so far. Responding to our invitation to draw and make things that matter to them in their local area, it features everything from beloved family dogs to recycling bins, from fictional beings to favourite trees.

We are excited to have more sessions coming up over the next few months, but wanted to share a few glimpses of what we’ve been up to so far. We know that even more fun and meaningful things will grow throughout the remaining sessions. More importantly, we are proud to help with this vital programme to offer a space to relax, make and try something new and different.

It has been so valuable getting to know the group and building trust and connection over time. 💙 There absolutely needs to be more support like this for young carers across the UK.
