Remembering History. Restoring Habitat. Reconnecting Community.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We’re grateful to the J.J. “Book” Wilson Field of Interest Fund at The Dallas Foundation for supporting Mapping Memory: The Constellation of Living Memorials Cultural Archaeology Education Program with a $20,000 grant!

This funding will help us not only remember history, restore habitat, and reconnect community in Lagow Cemetery, it will enable Southern Methodist University Hunt Institute and Dallas College to create programs and curricula that enable future leaders to do this important work. A diverse cohort of partners that additionally includes Texas Trees Foundation, Jackson-Breeding Consultant Group, Bertrand Neighborhood Association, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Dallas County, and Texas Historical Foundation will turn this sacred ground into a thriving green space that serves the surrounding community while respecting those interred.

What an amazing opportunity to learn and connect! Yesterday, CLM Symposium II, presented by @GarrettBoone, took place at @TexasAgriLife – Dallas County. A diverse group of 65 participants gathered to design a national movement that remembers history, restores habitat, and reconnects community by engaging historic cemeteries and public green spaces rather than places to be avoided. They listened to presentations and panels, then participated in working sessions that asked the questions at the heart of scaling the program across Texas, and beyond.

Special thanks to our emcee, Nathan May, session moderators Tamela Thornton, CCIM, Dr. Candice Lucas Bledsoe, and Brenda Floyd, keynote speaker Joseph Charap, presenters Matthew Orwat, Melinda Garde, and Grady McGahan, and all the panelists and attendees.

The 2nd Annual CLM Symposium is next Saturday, October 3rd, from 8:30am-3:30pm!

Presenting Sponsor: Garrett Boone

After completing a successful 2-year pilot in 6 cemeteries across southern Dallas, CLM entered the launch phase. The 2nd Annual CLM Symposium is intentionally designed as a working event. Rather than simply presenting a completed model, participants will help design the national framework that will guide CLM's growth across Texas and, ultimately, the nation.

🌿 Register today! Link in bio.

We are excited to have Nathan May serve as our emcee, with session panels moderated by Tamela Thornton, CCIM, Dr. Candice Lucas Bledsoe, and Brenda Floyd.

Thank you to everyone who supported Constellation of Living Memorials on North Texas Giving Day. Together, we raised $34,860!

Your support empowers us to reach more places, engage more volunteers, provide more education and expertise, and give more cemetery leaders the tools they need to restore and steward historic cemeteries.

As Paul Kwiatkowski, Director of Urban Ecology & Sustainability at Mount Auburn Cemetery explains:

“Cemeteries are often the largest green spaces in urban areas. They provide opportunities for wildlife to thrive and humans to get closer to nature, while also serving as sacred spaces for the bereaved. Cemetery landscapes are useful for longitudinal research related to the warming climate, as they typically have been in place for generations and plan to remain for many generations more. Cemeteries are “Urban Oases,” and when a proper balance between the managed and the wild in the landscape is struck, the benefits are realized by all.”

As an important partner in this work, we’d love for you to join us at the Second Annual CLM Symposium. Learn all about our growing momentum and help us design a national movement.

The Second Annual CLM Symposium takes place Saturday, October 3rd, from 8:30am – 3:30pm at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas. We’re bringing together cemetery leaders, conservation partners, historians, cultural archeologists, neighbors, volunteers, and other community members who share an interest in preserving these hallowed grounds, as well as the history, nature, and communities connected to them.

We hope you’ll spend the day with us, learn more about work happening across the US, and connect with others who care about these places as much as we do. by @constoflivingmemorials
