march 17 2pm @esschicago @x.a.li goes off about AI & aesthetics followed by a performance of 𝘌𝘤𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘴 part of @chicagocreativemachines curated by the indomitable @molly_e_jones❣️ --- In a talk titled "Undiscerning Mirrors," X. A. Li will discuss the aesthetic possibilities of deep neural networks given both their architectural constraints and societal context. How can artists approach machine learning systems critically and inventively, beyond assuming the functional paradigms established by scientists and tech companies? The talk will be followed by a performance of paired video and sound pieces 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 and 𝘌𝘤𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘴, exploring the dogma of self-optimization amplified, embodied, and refracted by algorithms. taken in Experimental Sound Studio by @consumermaterial

"FULL-TIME" premiering on the 16-channel CLEAT system Friday January 12 at @elasticarts alongside "The Black Arcade" by @allenmoorestudios. "Strong play, by contrast, cannot be reconciled with the principle of work and production. It puts life itself at risk." Spanning video, performance, interactive software, and spatialized sound, FULL-TIME explores the individual as laborer, subject, and ultimately human in a society dominated by the logic of production. Drawing upon Georges Bataille’s concept of sovereignty and Byung-Chul Han’s psychopolitics, FULL-TIME confronts the brittle contradictions of this system, its self-destruction already underway, and the unknown states that might follow. taken in Elastic Arts by @consumermaterial
