At the Conference for Research on Choreographic Interfaces, we believe artists are essential participants in conversations about technological futures.

Through residencies, performances, workshops, and research, we explore these questions, and so much more.

Know someone thinking about these questions too? Send this their way.

This week on Dances with Robots, Fynn takes the mic 🎙️

In “Falling to Fly: Space Camp for Artists,” our Producer Fynn Kugel steps out from behind the scenes and takes us inside CRCI’s Space Camp.

Space Camp in March 2026 set out to make room for dancers in space. It became a lesson in trust, care, and the culture we’d want to bring with us.

Why study the body in space when we have problems here on Earth? 🌎

Because changing the environment can reveal just how much we take for granted about being human: how we move, how we orient ourselves, what our bodies need, and who gets access to these experiences in the first place.

Season 2 of Dances with Robots uses space as a way to ask questions about bodies, movement, access, culture, and the futures we’re building, both out there and right here on Earth.

Episodes 1–4 are available now wherever you get your podcasts. 🚀

Episode 4 of Dances with Robots is all about space culture: the food we’ll eat, the spaces we’ll inhabit, the art we’ll make, the relationships we’ll form, and all the wonderfully creative things that make us human.

Space architect Brent Sherwood @brentsherwood brings decades of thinking about human life in space to the conversation, and talks about how design will continue to shape the future of space travel and the culture we create along the way.

Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century gave us a vision of life in space that felt surprisingly normal. There was school, gossip, questionable fashion choices, and, somehow, gravity.

But that last part is a little more complicated.

In Episode 3 of Dances with Robots, host Ariane Michaud uses Zenon as a jumping off point to ask what artificial gravity could actually look like, what happens to the body when our usual sense of up and down changes, and why movement gets very weird, very quickly.

How do we find our center when the usual cues that tell us where we are disappear?

In this video, taken at Brandeis University’s Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Laboratory, CRCI 2025/26 artist resident Laila Franklin @la.frank is experiencing the MART system, playing with some of the disorientation that might be experienced in zero gravity.

Sound on for Laila’s real time reactions as she tries to find her center. 🔊

Find out more in Episode 3 of Dances with Robots, available wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio!

And a huge thank you to Vivek Pandey Vimal @somdeland for letting us try the system and walking us through his research.

Last year, CRCI took a field trip to the Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Laboratory at Brandeis University @brandeisuniversity to get a little disoriented in the name of research.

A huge thank you to Vivek Pandey Vimal @somdeland and Janna Kaplan @kaplanjanna for welcoming us into the lab and sharing their research on gravity, balance, spatial orientation, and what happens to the body when our usual sense of “down” gets disrupted.

We were joined by several of our CRCI Artist Residents, who brought their own questions into the experience. This amazing cohort included Michael Figueroa, Kate Gow, Sasha Peterson, Laila Franklin and Sage Ni’Ja Whitson.

You can hear more from our visit in Episode 3 of Season 2 of *Dances with Robots*, out now wherever you listen to podcasts. 🚀
