I’m nearly there! 996 students have signed up and taken my online weaving course with @domestika_en ! 🙌🏻

Don’t be fooled by the slightly ambiguous title… I teach you to weave and hand sew a (very practical and) creative cushion using a frame loom.

But don’t just believe me, trust all the 5* reviews from students who have created their very own cushion!

Please help me to reach the 1k goal this holiday season. And if we do, I’ll run a little giveaway! Link in bio. 🎄❤️ 🧶 #learntoweave #weavingcourse #weavingworkshop

I spent the last two days visiting @decorex, the annual interiors trade show in London.

I met interior designers, product designers, architects, craftspeople and people working across the interiors industry — and had so many interesting conversations about materials, spaces and where design is heading.

I also talked about my own work. Where it’s going, what I’m experimenting with and where I imagine these woven surfaces might eventually find a place within an interior.

And something seemed to strike a chord.

The materials I use, the tactility and depth of the weaving, and this idea of creating textiles that can contribute something to a space beyond simply how they look seemed to resonate with the people I spoke to.

When you’re developing something new, much of it happens alone in the studio. You follow an idea because you believe there’s something worth exploring, without really knowing where it will lead or whether anyone else will see what you see in it.

So to take those ideas out into the world and have genuinely interesting conversations about their possibilities felt incredibly encouraging.

There is still a lot to explore. But I came away from Decorex with renewed energy — and the feeling that I might just be onto something.

Three-dimensional textiles featuring wool roving.

I’m interested in what happens when sound meets a surface like this. Rather than creating a flat textile, the wool roving projects forwards at different depths, creating an irregular, undulating surface.

How might different sound waves respond as they meet those changes in depth, density and material? What is reflected, absorbed or scattered — and how much can the structure of the textile influence that?

Shadowforms is still very much an exploration. Part artistic expression of materiality, part investigation into what might happen when textile design, interiors and acoustics begin to overlap.

I have lots of questions still to answer — which is rather the point.

And I’d love to hear from architects, acoustic specialists, sound engineers and material researchers: what would you want to test?

Materials. How many different ones do you think are in Shadowforms I?

There are eight:

1. Merino wool roving
2. Merino lambswool
3. Mercerised cotton
4. Linen
5. Paper yarn
6. Metallic rayon
7. Mohair
8. Wool felt

I’ve been talking a lot about materials recently, particularly through my Selvedge workshop, and this piece shows why they matter so much to my own practice.

Each brings something different — softness, structure, texture, stiffness, depth or density. Together, I’m exploring how those qualities can create a three-dimensional woven surface with acoustic potential, as well as something visually interesting.

For me, materials aren’t just about what a textile looks like. They’re about what it can do.

Materials matter.

As a weaver, choosing a warp and weft isn’t simply about colour. The weight, texture, structure, flexibility and behaviour of a material can completely change what happens on the loom.

I often begin with an idea of what I want to create, but the materials have their own say. Sometimes they behave exactly as I imagined. Sometimes they take the weaving somewhere completely unexpected — and often that’s where things get interesting.

Wool, paper, wire, fine yarns, chunky roving… changing just one material can alter the surface, structure, tension and character of a woven piece.

This was at the heart of the materials-led weaving workshop I taught for Selvedge London Textile Month this week. If you missed it, I’m planning to run this workshop again.

If you’d like to hear about the next date, sign up to The Oxford Weaving Studio newsletter via the link in my bio.

I’d love to explore materials with you next time.

Thank you to everyone who joined me in London yesterday for a wonderful day of weaving, experimenting and exploring materials.

This was a new workshop for me, bringing together something I’m passionate about in my own practice: how the materials we choose can completely change the character, structure and possibilities of a woven textile.

Using The Oxford Frame Loom and an additional heddle bar, we explored extra warps, layering, structure and some wonderfully unexpected material combinations.

What I loved most was seeing how differently everyone responded to the same starting point — by the end of the day, every piece had developed its own character.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped me bring this new workshop to life, and to @selvedgemagazine @museumofthehome @rickard_dearie and @illuminated_arts_peckham for a brilliant day of textiles all around us.

Swipe through from the very tidy beginning to the wonderful results!

Thank you to everyone @design_nationuk for an incredible few weeks at the Crafted Futures event @l_d_f_official .

Just a few highlights of the event where so many talented makers came together for an inspiring week of craft, art and design.

I am incredibly grateful to have been able to exhibit my acoustic textiles panels and discuss their potential with architects, designers, curators of craft and design and art aficionados.

Take down is done and we all deserve a few days to put our feet up!

With less than a week to go until my London Textile Month workshop, I’ve been thinking about the role materials play in my weaving practice.

I have always explored how different materials can work together in response to the project at hand—from wool and cotton to wire and fibre optics.

If you’ve ever wondered how to introduce new materials into your own practice, join me next Thursday at the Museum of the Home in London for an exploratory day of weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom.

We’ll consider how different materials behave within a textile, how those choices relate to the intended outcome, and how introducing an additional warp can expand your creative possibilities. I’ll also demonstrate how these ideas can be explored using a frame loom—and, of course, we’ll cover the essential techniques you need to begin and finish your weaving.

A few places are still available. Use the code SABO25 at checkout to receive an additional £25 discount. Booking link in bio.

I hope to see you there!

The last few days to pop in to the Crafted Futures exhibition and retail event at the OXO Tower is today until Sunday.

I’ll be in today (Friday) and Sunday from 11am - 6pm. Join me for a chat about my new acoustic panels and all things weaving and textiles!

Here is a close-up of ShadowForm II.

Woven to emphasise the wool roving and create a 3D surface to improve its acoustic potential. But within the warp, structure was needed. Look closer and you may see the paper and wire warp within the black stripes.

You can also just about see the wire in the weft, helping to balance the structure in both directions.

It’s this process of experimenting with materials, structure and scale that has gradually led the ShadowForms from woven experiments towards something with a more practical purpose. All while looking to architecture to inform some of these decisions.

I’ll be talking about how that happened, and where I’m taking the work next, at Crafted Futures on Monday at 12.30pm at OXO Gallery.
