Materials matter.

As a weaver, choosing a warp and weft isn’t simply about colour. The weight, texture, structure, flexibility and behaviour of a material can completely change what happens on the loom.

I often begin with an idea of what I want to create, but the materials have their own say. Sometimes they behave exactly as I imagined. Sometimes they take the weaving somewhere completely unexpected — and often that’s where things get interesting.

Wool, paper, wire, fine yarns, chunky roving… changing just one material can alter the surface, structure, tension and character of a woven piece.

This was at the heart of the materials-led weaving workshop I taught for Selvedge London Textile Month this week. If you missed it, I’m planning to run this workshop again.

If you’d like to hear about the next date, sign up to The Oxford Weaving Studio newsletter via the link in my bio.

I’d love to explore materials with you next time.

After years of focusing my time and energy in the world of weaving to teach and support others, I’ve re-balanced my design practice to focus on what I started out to do: use my skills as a weaver to create engaging designs and products through weaving.

Introducing ShadowForms, my first foray into acoustic textiles. Woven using wool, wire, paper, cotton and wool roving (the thick wool seen in the design) I’ve created a layered system to absorb, deflect and dissipate sound. I’m aim is to scale up these pieces and for large architectural spaces.

There is still much research and testing to do to refine this process, so if any of my engineering or architecture friends out there have any suggestions, I’m open to hearing your views. 😉

I may not have become an engineer or architect (#noregrets ), but I’m still channeling my curiosity into how things work, using my design skills to merge science and art.

With less than a week to go until my London Textile Month workshop, I’ve been thinking about the role materials play in my weaving practice.

I have always explored how different materials can work together in response to the project at hand—from wool and cotton to wire and fibre optics.

If you’ve ever wondered how to introduce new materials into your own practice, join me next Thursday at the Museum of the Home in London for an exploratory day of weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom.

We’ll consider how different materials behave within a textile, how those choices relate to the intended outcome, and how introducing an additional warp can expand your creative possibilities. I’ll also demonstrate how these ideas can be explored using a frame loom—and, of course, we’ll cover the essential techniques you need to begin and finish your weaving.

A few places are still available. Use the code SABO25 at checkout to receive an additional £25 discount. Booking link in bio.

I hope to see you there!

I’ve been shouting about this new exhibition in my emails and over on @csabodesigns . After returning from my lengthy (and fabulous) trip to Canada last month, I’ve barely had a moment to rest.

Crafted Futures is an event curated by the incredible team at Design Nation. Taking place during the London Design Festival, it features the work of 35 designers from a variety of disciplines including ceramics, jewelry, glass, furniture and textiles.

I have been privileged to have accepted as a professional member this year and this is my first exhibition with them. It has already been a rewarding event, especially garnering feedback about my new acoustic panels.

If you’re around London this weekend, pop in to the OXO Tower on the Southbank. I’m there today (Friday) and Sunday.

Where can learning to weave take you?

One of the things I love about weaving is just how many directions you can take it.

Looking at this group of weavers taking part in Selvedge London Textile Month makes that wonderfully clear. Across just a handful of practices, weaving becomes art, interiors, fashion, colour, pattern, texture and three-dimensional form — using different looms, materials, scales and techniques.

Several of these brilliant weavers are giving talks and sharing their practices during London Textile Month too, so if something catches your eye, there are opportunities to discover more about where they’ve taken their weaving.

It’s something I talk about a lot when I teach. I can teach you how to warp a loom, understand tension, create structure and experiment with materials — but ultimately, I want you to discover what *your* weaving looks like.

On 24 September, I’ll be teaching a full-day workshop at the Museum of the Home. We’ll use The Oxford Frame Loom to explore independent tension, structure and materials including wool roving, yarn, paper and wire.

Not to make everyone leave with the same thing — but to give you techniques you can take in your own direction.

The workshop is £150, and I have a special **£25 discount code: SABO25 , if you’d like to join me.

There hasn’t been much time for weaving on this travelling holiday. We’ve covered thousands of kilometres between Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Whistler, Jasper, Banff and Kelowna, and with all those incredible views and winding roads, we’ve been far too busy taking it all in.

But I did manage to sneak in a little weaving along the way.

The rustic colours I brought with me somehow felt right for the mountains. They’re not my usual weaving palette, but I’ve loved playing with colour, texture and the yarns I happened to pack. After seeing so many incredible blues and turquoises in the lakes here, though, I really wish I’d brought some brighter yarns with me!

This won’t become a commercial piece. It’ll simply be a small woven sample from my travels — something that connects the making I love with the places I’ve been.

My Oxford Frame Loom made that possible. Tucked into its felt pouch and carried in my backpack, it gave me a way to keep making wherever the journey took us — ready for a quiet moment, a new landscape or a flash of inspiration.

I didn’t need to know what I would weave before we left. The place, the colours and the time would shape it when the moment arrived.

I didn’t get much woven, but the loom was ready when I was — and sometimes, that’s all creativity needs.

One of my favourite moments in every workshop is seeing how differently everyone approaches the same materials. There isn't one "correct" outcome.

The Oxford Frame Loom encourages experimentation, so every woven piece reflects the person who made it. If you've been curious about weaving—or you're looking for a fresh creative challenge—I'd love to welcome you to my Selvedge workshop this September.

Every workshop I teach begins in the same place as my design practice: curiosity.

I'm fascinated by what happens when different materials meet, how texture, structure and colour can completely transform a woven surface.

That's exactly what we'll be exploring during my workshop for Selvedge London Textile Month. Come and experiment with materials, discover new possibilities and enjoy a day of thoughtful making.

FELLOW PARTICIPANT SHOUTOUT
There are so many amazing and inspiring things to see and do during Selvedge London Textile Month. A stone's throw away from my own show with @alihollowayweaver there are so many inspiring events @museumofthehome The talk Rhythm of the Loom with Vanessa Houlder, about weaving songs that shaped Britain's textiles workers lives. Drop -in events such as 'Woven Lives in Spitalfields', by Christopher Farr and Chris Dyson, exploring the histories of migration, refuge and belonging through the lens of the home. And of course fellow weavers @_kendallclarke and @suelawty and their superb workshop Threads of Paper - both highly esteemed and knowledgeable and one not to be missed. Whilst on the conversation of fellow weavers check out Cassandra Sabo's weave workshop @csabodesigns and @oxfordweavingstudio I feel so honoured to be a part of this incredible event alongside so many other creatives in the world of textiles. Which events are you attending? Maybe I’ll see you there! Head to the Selvedge link in bio or visit selvedge.org > Events > Textile Month to explore what’s on and book your place.
