Materials matter.

As a weaver, choosing a warp and weft isn’t simply about colour. The weight, texture, structure, flexibility and behaviour of a material can completely change what happens on the loom.

I often begin with an idea of what I want to create, but the materials have their own say. Sometimes they behave exactly as I imagined. Sometimes they take the weaving somewhere completely unexpected — and often that’s where things get interesting.

Wool, paper, wire, fine yarns, chunky roving… changing just one material can alter the surface, structure, tension and character of a woven piece.

This was at the heart of the materials-led weaving workshop I taught for Selvedge London Textile Month this week. If you missed it, I’m planning to run this workshop again.

If you’d like to hear about the next date, sign up to The Oxford Weaving Studio newsletter via the link in my bio.

I’d love to explore materials with you next time.

It was the last day of @design_nationuk Crafted Futures show at @oxotowerwharcf for @l_d_f_official .

It's been a fab show with great makers! I headed in from Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey for the last time on the high speed train. I think the Class 395 Javelin is my new favourite train 🚄.

It was nice to see @bobcatgallery

Started the pack down this evening and got a fair bit done before heading to Woolwich, my home for the night.

Early start in the morning for the final date of derig before heading home after living out of a bag for most of the last two weeks.

After years of focusing my time and energy in the world of weaving to teach and support others, I’ve re-balanced my design practice to focus on what I started out to do: use my skills as a weaver to create engaging designs and products through weaving.

Introducing ShadowForms, my first foray into acoustic textiles. Woven using wool, wire, paper, cotton and wool roving (the thick wool seen in the design) I’ve created a layered system to absorb, deflect and dissipate sound. I’m aim is to scale up these pieces and for large architectural spaces.

There is still much research and testing to do to refine this process, so if any of my engineering or architecture friends out there have any suggestions, I’m open to hearing your views. 😉

I may not have become an engineer or architect (#noregrets ), but I’m still channeling my curiosity into how things work, using my design skills to merge science and art.

Every piece of craft tells a story. From the person who made it, the materials and processes they choose, the place it came from and the ideas that inspired it.

Across Crafted Futures, these stories connect in different ways and we’ve brought them together through four themes:

Nature & Sustainability
Heritage Reimagined
Geometric vs Organic
Vibrancy & Calm

Explore the stories behind the work at OXO Gallery, @oxotowerwharf until Sunday 20 September, as part of @l_d_f_official

And read more about the thinking behind the project in our latest ‘In The Making’ article on Substack, find link in our bio.

Nature is a constant source of inspiration for many of the makers in Crafted Futures. From the landscapes they live and work in to the materials they collect, reuse and transform.

@joannaterryceramics captures the wild flora she encounters on her daily walks. @lauralee.ceramics draws inspiration from local woodland and uses renewable energy and reclaimed organic materials in her ceramic practice.

@angelaibbs transforms unwanted ceramics into colourful mosaic pieces, and @lila.rose.clothes uses discarded fishing rope, nets and line collected from the coastline to create new textile landscapes.

Together, these makers show the many ways contemporary craft can help us look more closely at the natural world, and think differently about the materials we use.

Craft traditions connect us to the past, but they are continually evolving.

In Crafted Futures, makers are taking techniques, materials and stories rooted in the past and giving them a contemporary perspective.

@alma.boyes has returned to the historic technique of agateware, while @designsbykathrynstevens draws on the shipbuilding heritage of her home in Cumbria. @threads_of_my_life works with traditional hand quilting, and @sarahmay.johnson continues to push the possibilities of weaving through experimentation on the loom.

@yilingwu_embroidery brings together traditional and contemporary embroidery, while @losaloujewellery draws on her Asian heritage through colour, pattern and form. @matt_reeves_furniture combines traditional hand craftsmanship with contemporary furniture design, using local hardwoods an

Made a case study out of the @fringeartsbath project for my website. @vistaprintuk did such a great job printing both the invitations and the brochures. Quality and quick turnaround! ✨ curated by @chloesavageartist (also responsible for the piece on the cover) and @katarina_orolinova_art (also responsible for exquisite pieces in the show) who did such an impressive job bringing it all to life. Tools used: @apple iPad; @procreate @adobecreativecloud

Stitch is never just stitch. Across different yarn crafts, the surface shifts depending on the hand and the technique. Punch needle builds soft relief, knitting creates rhythm through repetition, weaving forms structure with tension and balance, and colorwork changes how the fabric moves and catches the light.

Each method speaks its own language, yet they all begin with the same simple thread.

The artists behind the KOEL Stories of these different stitches are:
Fanny @la.fille.davril
Berdien @lille_i_nord
Jeanette @aircrochet
Cassandra @csabodesigns
Sylvia @wolmetverve
Kristina @purlsoho

Which texture draws you in most?
