The robustification continues...

RDLs still progressing nicely.

Have recently been adding in higher rep Jefferson curls after my heavy ging movements. They feel great and I've been making steady progress with these, too.

My monthly workout post these days lol.

Legggg Daaayyy!! 🦵

Grouping exercises into categories that share similar characteristics can be really helpful when trying to navigate the complex world of working out. Afterall, there really are endless options for exercises you can do.

There are tons of different exercises that can fall into each potential category, but each category should contain fundamental similarities that are helpful to understand. This way, you can be purposeful about what exercises to choose and why, as well as how to get the most out of each one. It helps you stay organized.

By using categories, you can ensure you aren't missing out on any major muscle groups and are staying well rounded with your training. You can also use them to target certain areas over others.

2 major categories of lower body exercises that are useful to include in some way pretty much all the time, are squats and hinges. These offer a lot of “bang for the buck”, hit lots of different muscle groups, and are easy to progressively overload (which, if you’ve been following along at all lately, you know is pretty important).

What’s your favorite variation of these?

Pullup to the gym! Come hang!

Pullups are an awesome upper body exercise that works the arms, back, and core tremendously well.

But they're also HARD AF 🥵

So if you currently can't do a pullup (yet 😉), but want to check that off your bucket list, here are some strategies to help get you there!

You can mix up the rep ranges, but lower reps, like 5 or less will build the most strength for your first pullup.

Not to mention you'll probably get way stronger and more jacked in the process. A nice bonus.

Following up on the stress post from before...

If your cup is overflowing, then ideally turn off the faucet lol. So, if it's possible to remove whatever is stressing you out from your life, maybe do that. But that isn't always realistic.

Sometimes, it just isn't feasible to get rid of a stressor. So if that's the case, and the stress is inevitable, what can we do about it?

Turns out, a lot. The way I personally look at it is through the same "cup" analogy. The mission is to stop the cup from overflowing.

To do that, you can add in release valves to let water out of the cup and bring the level down. Then, you can also build a bigger cup, so that you've got more room and can handle more water (stress) before you overflow.

"Release valves" are things that help mitigate stress acutely, or in the moment. Things like:
- Deep breathing
- Meditation
- Walking
- Exercise in general
- Hanging out with firends/loved ones
- Reading, painting, birdwatching, or anything that shifts you into a calmer state.

"Cup builders" are things that improve your tolerance to stress over time. (These are actually forms of stress, just dosed appropriately so your body can get better at handling it). Things like:
- Exercise (a winner again)
- Learning a new skill
- Mental challenges like games or puzzles
- Fasting
- Dosing yourself incrementally with snake venom to become immune and a worry-free snake charmer (although not highly recommended).

Basically, when things get rough, find ways to chill and let water out of your cup. And when they're not as rough, build that cup so you're ready for next time!

Alcohol can be a tricky subject. But it can also be a major limiter on many people's progress.

When it comes to something like this, it's important to be both realistic and recognize the objective impacts it can have, while also remaining understanding and non-judgemental (including of yourself) when addressing it.

Like understanding that alcohol itself and it's associated behaviors typically don't serve your best health and fitness interests, but that choosing to enjoy it from time to time doesn't mean you can't still be healthy and live an awesomely full life.

Raise a glass (or not) to that!

Consider this your crash course in barbell etiquette.

Regardless of what exercise you are doing with the barbell, there are a few super simple things that can help set you up for strength training success. Each exercise has its own unique set up and technique, but the tips in this post are good “rules of thumb” to help you crush any barbell exercise safely and effectively!

(Disclaimer: This post is for “bar” exercises only. It cannot save you from any “barre” or otherwise related exercises that are far, far, outside the scope of this post. You’re on your own for that 😂).

When someone says "stress", they're often referring to mental or emotional stress. Like being anxious about an upcoming exam or job interview. But truthfully, stress comes in many forms.

"Stress" can really be used to describe any kind external input that places a demand on the host system. In simple terms, it's anything that you or your body has to deal with. These can include tons of stuff like:

- Emotional stress or anxiety
- Mentally challenging tasks
- Exercise or physical exertion
- Poor sleep
- Poor nutrition
- Food sensitivities
- Allergies
- Environmental toxins
- Work stress
- Annoying neighbors
- The list goes on...

And all of these things fill up your proverbial cup. All of these take energy and resources to deal with. And the fuller your cup gets, the less room you have left to deal with anything else. Could this be a reason so many people deal with so many different issues? Our cups are overflowing?

I know for me, when my cup starts to get too full, I don't operate at my best. It's in these times where I try and reprioritize what is getting my attention and where I can mitigate unnecessary stressors taking up space in my cup. This allows me more bandwidth to put energy towards what really matters to me. Because it's all connected.

Also throwback to the long lost locks 👨‍🦱
