An early surprise: HOW TO DEFEND BOOKS AND WHY is here!

Of all my books, this one was the most challenging to write. For one thing, I wasn’t sure the book would be relevant anymore by the time it hit shelves — unfortunately, of course, it feels even more urgent now than it did when I started two years ago. On top of that, the book ban crisis was so widespread and so quick to evolve, it felt difficult to pin it down to anything representing a short and coherent book. But I think (I hope) the few stories I wrote about speak to both the nature of the crisis and how best to fight it.

It feels strange to talk about books when people are being abducted or killed by government forces in broad daylight, but it’s all connected. Fascists always start with books. To fight the book ban crisis is one way to fight the fascist takeover of our lives. I hope my book can plug into that fight in a useful way.

It’s now available wherever books are sold, but I hope you get it from a public library or an independent bookstore.

If you’re a librarian and you’d like a free copy, send me a DM. by @dannycaine

Jewish American Dream is out this August from @sarabandebooks. Here’s the cover, featuring a beautiful pastrami in acrylic by @maggiemargaret_cowles.

The inside features everything (bagels), the company car for Planet of the Vapes, Jewish astronauts, creeping suburban doom, futuristic bacon, and notable Jews Lenny Kravitz, Annie Leibovitz, and Paul Rudd.

I’d love for you to preorder it at the link in my bio. by @dannycaine

The final episode of THE DATA CENTERS ARE COMING is out today, featuring a new conversation with Cory Doctorow and much, much more.

This podcast series feels like a big leap forward in how I think about storytelling. Spending the last year making these episodes has been challenging, inspiring, and wildly rewarding.

Thanks so much to @ilsr_org for supporting this big idea, producers @engagereggie and @ilananevins for making it happen, and @emmcphie for this amazing episode art.

I really hope you give it a listen wherever you find your podcasts - the data center story is big, probably bigger than any of us know yet, and I’m honored that I got to take a stab at telling it. by @dannycaine

So excited to read this Thursday for @literarycleveland’s Plum City Reading Series at @loganberrybooks!

Any hometown reading is a big deal for me but this one is extra special - when I worked at Lit Cle, one of my proudest accomplishments was helping to create the Plum City series, which we hoped would fill a gap in the city’s literary life by establishing a big, community-oriented monthly reading featuring prominent local and national authors. To be invited to read at the series I helped build is humbling and quite meaningful.

I hope you’ll join us Thursday - in addition to all that, I get the pleasure of reading with @writsonia and @sonytonaime, two authors I look up to a great deal. Sonia’s hilarious and whip-smart new novel Girl’s Girl is causing a sensation for good reason (I loved it, tore through it in a day), and the work Sony does for literary community and poetry in general is admirable to say the least.

It’ll be a really special evening. See you Thursday at 7! by @dannycaine

Congratulations to the seven finalists of the inaugural Clintonville Books Poetry Award:

@travisclau
@darrencdemaree
@zoebrigley
@emilypattersonpoet
@quotidianwriter & David Dixon
@dannycaine
Adrianna Kimbrough

These books were selected for the distinctiveness of their voices, the originality of their perspectives, and their ability to express the immensity of human experience. Together, they reflect both the diversity and the shared threads that define this moment.

Thank you for your patience as we read through more than 100 submissions. Columbus is full of extraordinary poets. It was a privilege to spend time with your work.

To those not selected as finalists: this was a difficult decision. Your work remains valuable and compelling. Keep writing—we know you will.

There were many poems we admired and look forward to sharing some of them with our community in the coming months.

The winner will be announced Monday, April 27.

🙏
