It was an honor to scratch one off the bucket list and guest on @giantbombdotcom’s Game Mess Mornings.

This is the first, and hopefully not only, opportunity to guest on a podcast during Filipino-American History Month, but shoutout to @janjerome for keeping it šŸ’Æ with this fun question as we got ready for the stream and throwing some love to our Bay Area Filipino gaming homies! Our second annual FAN Career Summit was a success! šŸ’™šŸ’›Ā

Approximately 60 people showed up on September 19 at the SJSU Student Union to hear from our three panels: Purpose in Practice, Business and Belonging, and Inside the Hiring Process. In between each panel, our attendees networked with our featured guests, spanning from recruiters to entrepreneurs.

Career development can sometimes feel overwhelming, but our panelists were there to help make the journey feel a little more grounded and a lot more possible.✨

Many thanks to our panelists, moderators, sponsors, partners, board members, volunteers, and everyone who showed up to support. We hope the resume tips from @marieeeismagic, the nonprofit industry insights from @camillellanesfont, and the career stories from @krishaessj — along with all the advice from all our other panelists — were worthwhile! šŸ’«Ā

Ready to hear about what’s next? Follow us on LinkedIn @Filipino Alumni Network SJSU for upcoming events, opportunities, and more!Ā

It was an absolute whirlwind of a weekend, courtesy of my alma mater, San Jose State University. I don’t really brag much about my time there, but I definitely kinda have to now.

We just wrapped up the @fansjsu 2nd Annual Career Summit, and it was an amazing experience. It was an honor to host last year’s Inaugural Career Summit, and being able to host it again less than a year later with this year’s amazing committee really makes me feel fortunate. The best part of the event this year was speaking again with the students and attendees who went last year and hearing how much more rewarding it was to come back after everything they learned at the first one and apply it. I never really thought about these experiences building on one another, and moments like these make all the time and effort spent on the event well worth it.

Right after the event, I was invited to watch the SJSU Football game against Fresno State from the comfort and luxury of the President’s Suite, and it was even more unforgettable to be invited on the field to be honored alongside other SJSU API organization representatives. I don’t get many perks with all the things I’m involved in, so this definitely felt like a treat. I even got to meet both our mascot and the university president. That’s the second SJSU president I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with!

My term as FAN SJSU’s Director of Professional Development ends at the end of the year, and I’m excited to see the event’s future and the legacy it leaves. Thank you to FAN, SJSU, and everybody who supported these programs and activities for trusting me to plan, collaborate, and deliver. Last, but not least—one more special thanks is in order for @__clarissamae for encouraging me to come back and give back, something I’ve always loved doing.

My third PAX West, and second with Gamers Outreach, is a wrap. This is the busiest event that I do, because I have responsibilities at the booth, and then during my lunch, I try to be the same games media guy doing coverage that people know at SGF.

This, combined with the hospital visits we do that I have to show up to Seattle early for, and you have quite a tired Danreb. The food is fire as usual though!

I’m on my way home now, but gotta turn things right around for Tech Week in Palo Alto before putting some focus on FAN SJSU’s 2nd Annual Career Summit.

I graduated with a degree in Journalism with an Emphasis in Magazines, and the reason why was because I wanted to work in the video game industry and become a respected writer and critic for a well-known publication. This is what I’ve wanted ever since high school, and I’ve been writing for well over 20 years, mostly for my own publication, hoping that one day my name would be printed somewhere people actually know about.

In August 2024, @gameinformermagazine was shut down. As far as I know, it was the only remaining video game magazine in the United States. Not only that, but it happened while I was laid off from EA. It felt like my world and my passions were falling apart—and don’t get me wrong, they still are. But in September of that year, I was hired by Gamers Outreach, and a few months later in March of 2025, a miracle occurred to bring Game Informer back. At the same time, my site @smashpad_ continued to grow and become respected on its own merit, allowing me start pitching other publications including Game Informer, while I gave assignments I planned on doing to other deserving writers. The freelancer world is more competitive than ever, but I have a quality a lot of others don’t: I don’t really NEED this, but I WANTED this for LONGER than most, and I knew I put the work in.

In June, right before Summer Game Fest, I was asked by the magazine’s Executive Editor if I could review #NBATheRun. The game ended up launching right after the event, and it was a busy time for everybody in the industry, but there was no way I was gonna let that opportunity get away.

With just one half-page review, I can finally say I’ve been professionally published on one of the ā€œbig boy sitesā€ and the premier gaming magazine in the country. Thank you so much to @i_am_wesley_ for replying to my LinkedIn DM letting me know about pitching, and thanks to Brian Shea for keeping me in mind, eventually assigning me a piece, and finally letting me experience professional editing that I didn’t have to do myself.

Now I just gotta get a GameSpot byline, guest appearances on Giant Bomb and Kinda Funny, and my games media infinity gauntlet is complete. Let’s make it happen. by @danreb

This weekend was an absolute whirlwind. Because I was denied press for the third year in a row and deciding to make commitments to Offkai Expo for work and a beautiful baby shower, I didn’t actually plan on attending San Diego Comic-Con. Then, I got an invite to the Fandom Party, I was able to find people willing to share a corner of their hotel room, and with that — the San Diego blitz was on!

After flying to SD at 6AM, I made it in time for a press breakfast with Hasbro to check out their latest offerings, and got to help Marie interview the head of design for Magic the Gathering! Then it was off to the Peanuts X Super 7 pop-up to cover it with Temple of Geek, I tried out the demo for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, went to an private off-site activation for The Wolf Among Us Remastered, went over to the Hilton to be among the first to try out Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and FINALLY got to walk the SDCC expo hall and bought some amazing art from Malia like I do every year. Then it was time for the Fandom Party, which is ALWAYS a blast. I even ran into Patrick Renna, Tony Revolori, and April O’Neil.

Then it was time to go home on Friday morning (at 6AM once again), and after I did some work it was time to get the scope of Offkai with my boss. Saturday was dedicated to @kelleymonje and @jumonje’s beautiful baby shower before heading to Angelica’s niece’s birthday dinner, and on Sunday, it was all business at Offkai Expo.

And now we’re back to work on this Monday. Stay grinding folks. Hopefully next year I can go back to my FULL SDCC planning ways. Still, it’s crazy looking at how I do it now. 10 years ago, it was just panels and the expo hall. Now I’m doing meetings with Hasbro, Nintendo, and rubbing elbows with celebrities at the Fandom Party. Hopefully that means I’ll be an SDCC panelist or host sooner than later. by @danreb

Another year, another EVO. It felt different for all sorts of reasons, mainly a seemingly lower turnout, but it’s always enjoyable spreading the word about the good work Gamers Outreach does. It doesn’t hurt being entertained with our booth was situated in front of the Marvel Tokon booth too. This was also my most chill and adult trip to Vegas… I never even step foot in a casino outside of the airport! taken in Las Vegas, Nevada by @danreb
