Orion White and his band, Wen'ipt, opened at The Old Church for Isaiah Collier last night. Orion and his baritone sax have emerged as top young talent on Portland's lively jazz scene. He and his band put on a wonderful show to a packed house earning a raucous standing ovation in appreciation of their performance. Jazz is alive and well in Portland and in good hands with young musicians like Orion. @dat.bari.sax @theoldchurchconcerthall @the_1905 @kmhd_jazz_radio taken in The Old Church Concert Hall by @dat.bari.sax

Orion White, and his baritone sax rolled into my Becker Canyon Studio today. Orion has performed the past two years at the Montavilla Jazz Festival. Last year with his band, No Soap Radio and this year in a homage to jazz great Jim Pepper. Orion's approach to music lies in his Native American heritage. Although he has only been in Portland for a few years, he enriches our local music scene every time he takes up his horn. @jeremywilsonfoundation @dat.bari.sax @montavillajazzfest taken in Garden Home - Raleigh Hills, Portland, Oregon by @dat.bari.sax

Wen'ipt exists to share indigenous artistry and bring awareness to the contributions native peoples had on jazz. Bringing together original compositions, cultural storytelling, and a jazz language, Wen’ipt is both a musical and communal offering—one that builds connection between Portland’s jazz scene and Indigenous presence, while opening space for reflection, learning, and celebration. Led by bari saxiphonist Orion White, Wen'ipt shares music Nez Perce, Dine, Ojibwe, Muscogee, Kaw, Abanaki, and Tlingit artists and always plays at least one tune by Portland legend Jim Pepper.
.
Catch them on Saturday, September 5th at the SoundsTruck NW Stage at Montavilla Plaza at 1 pm!
