Thank you to all who came out for the open studio!!! I appreciate everyone hustling to come out on a Monday afternoon. There’s a lot of focus in these shots!! We had a small watercolor practice that we all got quite into…including a couple of curious adults. Thank you Kristi and Colin! A very special thank you to Alina who helped me prepare for the guests! You are a gem! taken in Corona Del Mar, CA by @deballenart

‘Changing Blues’ - Watercolor and my favorite sea salt from the Sea of Cortez. This salt is the perfect size grain to make mesmerizing formations.

My name is Deborah Allen (Deb) and I am starting to teach children’s art classes next week, and we will kick off the lessons by creating a version of this with some drawing, too!

I’ll share more about my art background soon. In the meantime, I am located in Corona Del Mar, CA and have been gardening at my son’s school for a few years. I have enjoyed creating gardens with the kids so much! It has brought me more joy than I could have imagined! It has brought me back to my roots of gardening with my grandparents as a child and remembering how much I love working with children. It will be an art and nature focused time together. taken in Corona Del Mar, CA by @deballenart

I saw an old friend this weekend! It was so nice to enjoy this painting in a new light and with the owner’s favorite interpretation of it.

And thank you @ericaelan for capturing the moments in still photography after I completed this painting - was so happy to find these shots. You have so many gifts and one of them is being able to see people and capture the essence of them and their creations. Thank you! taken in Burbank, California by @deballenart

The out of body experience experience I had at the David Gibson workshop @davidsgibsoncw yesterday with @ike_isenhour_reductionist and Rowan in LA! Ike invited us to ride along to check on some highly customized textile samples - The owner Luis gave us a tour. I was speechless. They make their own yarn from raw material, mix their own color and use their unique processes to create these custom made textiles for each client. Thank you Luis for sharing your process with us. Looking forward to seeing you again soon! taken in Highland Park, L.A. by @deballenart

Back before instagram let us make reels and edit our own music, ect! This is part of a large series I painted on commission for a client. These watercolors were meant to inspire healing and calm for the client’s health care center. I was able use some of my favorite watercolor techniques and drawing abilities together in one place! This stage in the process was after I painted and was transitioning into drawing with ink next - a love affair with the flowers before I began the drawings! The light outside was so beautiful, too! taken in Corona Del Mar, CA by @deballenart

REALLY looking forward to a road trip across the West SOON!!

This shot was taken on a road trip back from Santa Fe….from the edge of Navajo Nation. We (@floatinglanternpro, myself and Rowan at 4 years old) had been filming the last portion of our documentary ‘Emerging From The Garden of Thorns’…

The red cliffs were so captivating …I wanted to stop and soak it in. We met the kindest Diné man - Benny - who stopped to check on us and make sure we were okay as I took this pic of my painting on the side of a country road (and incidentally next to his property). He drove out to meet us and made our day. Thanks Benny for your kindness and beautiful stories. by @deballenart

My Mother’s Day card to all of you! Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there …here on Earth and on the other side! We remember you and love you! Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who do what mom’s would do for others - take care of their loved ones, community, furry babies, nieces and nephews and more!! Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing mom Sandy and my wonderful mom-inlaw Pam…and to the women in my life who have mothered / mentored me through my adult years! @maryblakefinearts … You know who you are! Thank you! It takes a village!!

I recently made this linoleum block print. It was inspired by a re-introduction to my love for the life cycle and migration of the Monarch Butterflies (and our garden at school @harborviewpfo )! This is a Monarch resting on a tree filled with sleeping butterflies all around it in Michoacán, Mexico.

When I was a kid, my Memma in Galveston, TX used to throw wildflower seeds out into the yard between her beach house and the sand dunes. I asked her why she was tossing seeds into the grass and she said, ‘These are wildflower seeds. We are planting wildflowers so the Monarchs have food on their way down from Canada to Mexico.’ My grandparents always had a beautiful Texas Native Wildflower labyrinth in their yard. Very natural looking but very intentional. And so began my visual of the vital migration and love for this spectacular creature. taken in Corona Del Mar, CA by @deballenart

Ike Isenhour working out the fine details of custom furniture as I layout the placement of said pieces. Next step is bringing the ensemble to life in 3D by hand. Working in tandem with Ike and working out the proportions is always a fulfilling process to experience.
