We traveled to Burlington, Vermont to attend the opening celebration of the city’s newly renovated Main Street, and to see our Magnus sculptures installed in front of the magnificent county courthouse for the first time.Magnus is a series of three sculptures carved from locally quarried granite, that double as street-side seating. Taking the form of giant snails, they were inspired by the spiral-shaped gastropod fossils found in the region surrounding Lake Champlain, when the basin was an inland sea hundreds of millions of years ago. The Maclurites Magnus were giant salt water snails, and our sculptures are a fantastical and playful extrapolation. The Magnus sculptures also mirror the dressed granite and marble architectural detailing of the courthouse on Main Street, a beaux-arts exemplar designed by James Knox Taylor in 1906. Our sculptures are sourced from the same vein of granite...#wowhaus #publicart #sculpture #siteresponsive #stonesculpture #granite #burlingtonvermont #burlingtoncityarts #bca #magnus #gastropod #surrealism by @deepcraft

Ene and I are thrilled to announce that Wowhaus has been awarded the public art commission for the expansion of the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. Designed by SmithGroup, the LEED Gold Certified complex will include new buildings, infrastructure and landscaping to support patient care for this nationally-renowned institution. We look forward to working closely with the design team and community stakeholders as we develop concepts for multiple sites over the coming months. Ene and I raised our daughter within blocks of this fine hospital so this project is especially dear to us as a kind of homecoming. We are particularly inspired by how the design honors the Temescal Creek watershed, where the facility is sited, as both aesthetic template and protected habitat.(Image by Carducci Associates)..#wowhaus #publicart #sculpture #benioffchildrenshospital #smithgroup #chandracerritoartadvisors #siteresponsive #temescalcreek by @deepcraft

Of all the chairs I’ve designed over the years the Jay Martin is the most personal. The concept was inspired by my maternal grandfather, Wilbur Allison Martin, who everyone called ‘Jay’. Jay Martin was an aeronautical engineer and one of the first to graduate in the engineering program at Pratt Institute in 1916. He was almost a generation older than my grandmother and died when I was too young to really know him, so I cherished the tools and documents he left behind. The Jay Martin Chair is a kind of portrait in this way and is my attempt to combine his characteristic Yankee frugality with the feeling of dreamy ingenuity I imagine coursed through his veins and drew him to flight.I recently rediscovered my original prototype while organizing my studio. It had been stored in its folded position for over thirty years, but the basic structure was still in good shape. I had recently met Emma Casey and was impressed with her body of work as @landfallleatherworks and was equally inspired by her spirit of adventure. I invited her to collaborate with me to reinterpret the chair using her upcycled sails and exquisite sewing and rigging skills. We are currently working together to design a production version of the improved Jay Martin prototype shown here, featuring locally sourced woods and upcycled sails. (Slide 3 shows my original model shot on location in the early 90s)..#deepcraft #furnituredesign #beachchair #landfallleatherworks #jaymartinchair by @deepcraft

Our daughter Aili is expecting her first child this September so I made her a rocking chair. It’s really for the whole family but I know that she will be primarily breaking it in while still pregnant and using it for nursing and soothing the baby once he is born. I made my first rocking chair before Aili was born, which she interpreted as a fun and challenging climbing structure when she was a toddler. I called it ‘Crotch Rocket’ but she called it the ‘Woh-woh-woh chair’ whenever she stood on it to make it rock. She’d sing, “Woh-woh-woh! woh-woh-woh!..” For me, making a rocking chair felt like an extension of parenting, and a kind of initiation to grandparenting. I spent a lot of time with Aili when she was a baby and toddler and she loved when I formed my hands into a basket for her to sit in while I swung her around on a wild ride. I wanted to convey a similar feeling of being held so I designed this chair with a woven rush seat, and proportioned the seat rails to make a slight scoop in the weave pattern of the seat.I designed this rocker as a modification of an early Stickley rocker we own from around 1909. Gustav Stickley is well known as the progenitor of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and I prefer his earlier, simpler furniture designs. I made my rocking chair of cherry to keep it light in both weight and color, and employed very straight forward joinery and proportions. I wanted to focus on the chair’s functionality and comfort, and evoke the long-lasting tools, cabinets and classic architecture associated with the American Craftsman style. The chair is also a bit of a time capsule in that I used strips I cut from my old Harris Tweed jacket to pad the gaps between layers of rush. This is the jacket I was wearing when I first met Ene in 1988 and I’ve kept it long past its useful life, waiting for the proper way to reuse the excellent wool...#deepcraft #furnituredesign #rockingchair #rushseat #artsandcrafts #artsandcraftsmovement #gustavstickley #harristweed by @deepcraft

This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of our earliest commissions as Wowhaus, the Kitchen Classroom for the original Edible Schoolyard at MLK JR Middle School in Berkeley. We were commissioned by the Chez Panisse Foundation and the Center for Ecoliteracy to transform one of the school’s ‘portable’ buildings into a kitchen classroom to support the cultural cooking curriculum inspired by the recently established Edible Schoolyard. Our design was initially considered to be temporary while the main building and campus were under extensive renovations, but it has remained relatively unchanged and has been in constant use and thriving ever since.Ene handled the surfaces, colors and lighting of the interior, and I designed and made all of the furnishings and cabinetry. I upcycled vintage drawers and doors from demolition of the school’s original lunch room and related lockers, and designed hutches and cabinets that featured them in their original form. I wanted to evoke a deep sense of homeplace in the furnishings, and also made very sturdy, generous tables with cast concrete tops (by Buddy Rhodes) and bases made from old growth douglas fir salvaged from an abandoned railroad trestle bridge. These photos are scanned from the original 35mm slides we shot soon after installation in 2001...#wowhaus #edibleschoolyard #kitchenclassroom #furnituredesign #chezpanissefoundation #centerforecoliteracy #upcycling by @deepcraft

✨Public Art Program Project Highlight✨This installation, titled “Makkeweks” (2019), from Oakland‘s Civic Art Collection is a monumental bronze sculpture by Bay Area artist team Wowhaus and was inspired by an Ohlone folktale of a mythical Bay sea creature. The 16 foot sculpture can be found set within a rain garden that captures and treats stormwater at Snow Park (Harrison St & 19th St, Lakeside Drive). “Makkeweks” blends features of native species like the leopard shark and bat ray, celebrating the return of wildlife to Lake Merritt. Community input and collaboration with City landscape architects shaped every detail.Funded by Measure DD, “Makkeweks” stands as a symbol of Oakland‘s commitment to restoration storytelling and place based public art. We are deeply honored that Wowhaus has been awarded the public art commission for Bethesda Park in Denver, Colorado. Bethesda Park will be a welcome new addition to the University Hills neighborhood, providing a pedestrian greenway with a wide range of amenities for all ages and abilities. Our ‘Flourish’ proposal features a series of colorful, vertical sculptures celebrating butterflies native to the region, including the monarch, swallowtail and hairstreak. Each sculpture will consist of laminated, dichroic glass panels housed in waterjet-cut stainless steel frames. Our concept was inspired by a new pollinator garden planned for the park, and the history of the neighborhood as the former site of the Bethesda Sanitorium, famous for nurturing both physical and mental health. Butterflies are symbols of renewal, joy and transformation in many cultures around the world. We are entering a final design phase, and working closely with our multi-talented friend Matt Horick, who will be fabricating the sculptures and installing them later this year.3D renderings by Quinby Duble@heelermc @mghorick #wowhaus #publicart #sculpture #sitetesponsive #sitespecific #bethesdapark #denver #butterfly #flourish by @deepcraft

Ene and I launched our first Wowhaus website in 1999 and have been actively updating it every few years since. We are pleased to announce the latest version, which represents our most up to date body of work. Please check it out and send any thoughts. Some of the text still needs tweaking, but the basics are pretty solid. Link in bio...#wowhaus #wowhausllc #publicart #publicsculpture #siteresponsive #sitespecific #socialpractice by @deepcraft

Feeling very grateful to have been granted some much needed time for inspiration and rejuvenation @fitzartistresidency. I find it to be increasingly valuable to have any kind of calm respite or space to dream without the pressures of deadlines or the flood of corrosive distractions in the news. Between forest baths in an old growth redwood grove, hikes around the beautiful property, and warm soaks in the cedar tub, I’m dreaming up some new ideas for games, a picture book, chunky sculptural furniture, and a modular treehouse...#fitzartistresidency #wowhaus #deepcraft #westcounty by @deepcraft

I’ve been prototyping a new paipo bellyboard design for a bellyboard-shaping workshop I’ll be leading late this May in Biarritz, on the beautiful Basque Coast of Southwest France. I’m honored to be part of this exciting multi-day retreat organized by Maggie Spicer/WHISK, called “Côte Sauvage: Shaping Moments on the Edge of the Atlantic”. Participants will be treated to the wild-foraged creations of chef Joss Ueng, and the mindful movement of Vinyasa yoga teacher Annsonia Baudelot. I will be sourcing sustainably harvested spruce from the Jura mountains for the workshop, and am currently hand-shaping a prototype in deodar cedar using the kinds of tools I will have available.Link in bio#cotesauvage #bellyboard #paipo #biarritz #basquecoast #surfculture #yogaretreat #whisksf #deepcraft #wowhaus by @deepcraft
