✨Public Art Program Project Highlight✨ This installation, titled “Makkeweks” (2019), from Oakland‘s Civic Art Collection is a monumental bronze sculpture by Bay Area artist team Wowhaus and was inspired by an Ohlone folktale of a mythical Bay sea creature. The 16 foot sculpture can be found set within a rain garden that captures and treats stormwater at Snow Park (Harrison St & 19th St, Lakeside Drive). “Makkeweks” blends features of native species like the leopard shark and bat ray, celebrating the return of wildlife to Lake Merritt. Community input and collaboration with City landscape architects shaped every detail. Funded by Measure DD, “Makkeweks” stands as a symbol of Oakland‘s commitment to restoration storytelling and place based public art. Scott @deepcraft and I met nearly 13 years ago when he was leading a multi-day workshop on hand-carving and shaping wooden belly boards with wood native to Northern California in Marin County (SF Bay Area). To this day, that multi-day, retreat-like experience has stayed with me, not only because I learned new skills, working with my hands and vintage Japanese tools to form my personal board, hosted at the Headlands Center for the Arts to the backdrop of spruce, mess hall meals, and a shared openness amongst participants to make new connections and form friendships. The experience has endured because it felt genuinely authentic. It was vibrant, alive, earnest. It wasn’t another retreat focused on fitness and eating clean; instead, it was centered around gaining semi-practical knowledge, allowing oneself to be vulnerable creating practical art that for many of us was the first time working with wood and hand tools, and then testing that art in the Pacific. Would it float? Skim? Drift? It left me—and I believe many of us—in awe of what we’re capable of when we carve and dedicate the time in our schedules to begin anew, take a risk, admit we are a total beginner, and to disconnect from the connected world and be held largely by nature and the wide unknown of potential and possibility. It was a fantastic experience and I would do it again if provided the container in a heartbeat. And thus, I invite you to consider a leap of your own this September. We’ll also welcome master global forager @_flavor_saver_ Adam Lawrence, and tenured Vinyasa yoga leader @annsobaudelot to deepen the experience and incorporate the senses. Venture with me, with us, to the humbly stunning French Basque Coast of Biarritz, where we are crafting a retreat inspired by a sense of re-wilding. Of Pronoia, and kinetic potential. This semester at California College of the Arts, I am teaching a class I’ve put together through the UDIST program. Ocean Culture. Our first project is on the mysteries of the ocean specifically the mysteries of the ocean/sea monsters today we had the good fortune of having Scott Constable, an amazing artist and lover of all things ocean related present after our morning presentation of sketches. I love teaching at CCA. The combination of the students enthusiasm, the community of people I get to be around, and my own excitement around the subject, feeds my soul. Scott Constable and his lovely wife and collaborator Ene Osterass created thewowhause, and art and design team of focus on public art, strategic planning design, and architecture.
