Mike Stewart, 1996, Maalaea, Maui. This was Mike’s 2nd stop on The Storm Chase (or maybe it should be called The Swell Chase). Mike started riding the swell in pumping Tahiti, then he followed the same swell to Maui. After catching the swell at Maaalea, he went to California’s The Wedge and also The Channel Islands. Mike finished up his Storm Chase with some waves from the same swell up in Alaska. A great story with lots of unseen archival footage in the Nalu Vault.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Derek Hoffmann @derekhoffmann808 fell in love with the ocean and still photography at his home break, Sandy Beach, before moving to the North Shore and picking up a movie camera. His in-water 16mm work on the 1989 theatrical release Rolling Thunder set the course for a life behind the lens. He went on to travel the world filming Rip Curl’s legendary Search program alongside director Sonny Miller, contributing to iconic films like Searching for Tom Curren. Today, Derek is the founder of Nalu TV and Nalu Film Foundation, and has made it his mission to preserve and digitize surf cinema’s most treasured archives — ensuring the history of the sport is never lost to time.

Early 90s, Hauoli Reeves at Sandy Beach Shorebreak. Before GoPro, cell phones and the internet- we were using 16mm film cameras in custom water housings. Load the camera in a black bag, get wet, get in the tube and shoot film, eat lunch, mail the film in to get processed, and hope that you got the focus and exposure correct… with no light leaks to ruin the film.
