Mozambique , a day in the the Search that lives etched in my memory!
It had been a harsh week on a catamaran sailing up the coast from Richards bay in South Africa to to a remote island off the coast near Maputo the capital of Mozambique. A country that had been shattered by nearly two decades of civil war. The whole country was in tatters.
We had about 8 days straight in large swells sailing against a massive current and finally got of for our first surf in this devastating land.
Every thing was challenging, swimming to shore through the surf with camera gear in pelican cases, tripods.
Our All star crew of Tom Curren and co scored remarkable surf that we literally stumbled across..
It had local natives spell bound as they witnessed the magic of men dancing on water and the went in to raptures when a surfer magically reappeared from a tube.
They were more stoked than the surfers!
Unbeknown to the locals they were privileged to witnessing the worlds best at this Art of surfing.
Post surf the swell had got to big to get back out to the boat and necessitated a walk to an unknown destination with all our gear for several hours to rendezvous with boat at the nearest bay .
Every one was on edge fearing malaria, armed attack or just being totally lost Night began to engulf our naive crew.
Out of nowhere emerged a band of local children singing and dancing and navigated us through a shallow sea of urchins and guided us to safety.
This image is from that little welcome dance, and make up some of my fondest memories of the Search. Shared with the legendary Sonny Miller .
A little reminder to me that life is about the Journey.

Epic times on The search for Ripcurl. First photo trip to the Mentawai islands, Indonesia in 1993 with Sonny Miller, Tom Curren, Damien Hardman, Brock Little, Gary Green, Frankie Oberholzer, Martin Daly, Jeff Hornbaker and Myself. Great memories with such legends !
