i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. people see the partnerships, the events, the student impact and assume things just fell into place. but behind every single one of those moments is a version of me driving two hours to set up a workshop alone, sending follow-up emails at midnight, and hearing « no » more times than i can count. i started learnit because i saw a gap between what school teaches and what young people actually need. four years later, 38 events and 3,000+ students into it, i’m still learning that the work doesn’t get easier. you just get more honest about what it costs. and i wouldn’t trade it 🫶 by @dhiraj.hr

100 students in Construction SHSM programs spent the day building scale models of the Mississauga skyline alongside 30 architects, engineers, and developers. Mentorship.

City Hall, Adamson Estate, and twin twisting towers took home the top three.

100 students. 33 teams. 4 hours. One miniature Mississauga.

The whole thing started with keladafelo, a Mississauga high schooler who built a replica of the Marilyn Monroe Towers using only Dollarama supplies. The Mayor saw it, called it the future, and handed him the Key to the City 🔑

We watched students ask if they could skip lunch to keep building. We watched mentors get serious about concept behind each designed. We watched a city skyline appear out of foam board.

Helen Pereira-Raso (Superintendent & CEO, GEMS Dubai American Academy DAA former Head of School, (HTS) Holy Trinity School) shares a pivotal lesson she learned from her students early in her career.

She was teaching by the book until her students' honest feedback made her realize she had missed the most crucial step: getting to know them.

When she discovered a student's passion for skateboarding, she redesigned her entire urban geography unit around mapping and planning skateparks. The lesson became deeply meaningful because it was finally connected to who they were.
