Before Canada became a country in 1867, there were churches already operating schools on First Nations lands. Onsetting a long brutal history of institutions designed to assimilate First Nations children and indigenous communities.

In 1930, an annual report from the department of Indian affairs recorded more than 80 residential schools operating across Canada.

These institutions were created to separate Indigenous children from their homelands, their parents, their brothers and sisters, their aunties and uncles, their grandparents, their languages, their culture, their ceremonies and spiritual practices.

Residential schools were not an education system. They were designed to destroy and bury First Nations culture, to take the land and the resources.

In 1883 Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, told the House of Commons “When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages; he is surrounded by savages, and though he may learn to read and write his habits, and training and mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write. It has been strongly pressed on myself, as the head of the department, that Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of white men”.

In 1920, Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs Duncan Campbell Scott stated that the government’s objective was to continue until there was “not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic.”

The Canadian government banned and prohibited Indigenous culture and spiritual traditions. Through amendments of the Indian Act, sacred artifacts of ceremonial and spiritual significance were confiscated and destroyed. Spiritual leaders were persecuted. Children were forcefully taken from their homes and placed in these institutions.
