I just got word that “the law changed” at 3am this morning.

People are going to start getting arrested for “Criminal Mischief” at the crosswalk by Pulse.

I’m coming out in a couple hours with printed case law regarding the elements of criminal mischief and a case regarding First Amendment protection of free speech in city parks and sidewalk, with the likelihood of crosswalks being an extension of said sidewalks.

If anyone gets arrested, please have them call me. I am taking any case of criminal mischief pro bono through The Simons Law Firm, PLLC.

DO NOT RESIST ARREST. We have a solid defense for simple charges of criminal mischief. Please do not make the case more complicated by resisting.

I do not have the ability to be there all day. I have some contacts at the crosswalk, but please inform me if any arrests are made so I can help support our community and fight back for those actively representing us. This is the time where I come in.

ORLANDO CALL TO ACTION:

FHP has once again changed their tune as to the reason they want to arrest people and prevent us from being visible in the community. Originally, they cited the criminal mischief statute...talking about “defacing” the crosswalk. However, “defacing” is not part of that statute, which I pointed out to him. It REQUIRES injury or damage to property.

Now, FHP wants to arrest people under Florida Statute 316.0775. However, a crosswalk is NOT a traffic control device.

FDOT has already erased our work as of today. So, tomorrow, SATURDAY the 30th, at 10am we are calling all members and allies of the community to help us re-chalk the sidewalk again. I do not believe they have a lawful reason to arrest us, but it does not mean it won’t happen. We should not be silently erased. Regardless of if the Governor indicates it applies to everyone, this issue was born of the hate shown toward our community...no other reason.

It’s our Freedom of Speech in a public forum. The crosswalk is an extension of the sidewalk, a traditional public forum. If there are many pedestrians using the crosswalk, then traffic MUST YIELD TO US. If some people happen to chalk in the pavement as conductive speech, oh well. LET’S GO FOR A WALK AT 10AM!!! by @disfaybled

FIRE SHOW POST!!! 🔥😍🩷 What an incredible privilege and honor it was to get to perform in the @metrocon_fl fire show this year as a full-time wheelchair user. 🩷💛⚙️💛🩷

It was definitely quite a challenge at times to figure out exactly how to make our act work as we went into rehearsals this year. We had to quickly decide what tactics we could use and how we could bend our choreography to lend to me spinning fire when I also needed my hands to, like, MOVE ?? 😂 But it was so incredibly worth it and I can’t wait to keep seeing what’s possible!

And it really hit me when person after person came up to me at the con to tell me how’d much it meant to them to see a wheelchair user performing. To hear that they’d written off any ideas of performing themselves due to their disabilities, but then seeing me gave them hope again. To hear that people teared up seeing me perform because having that representation in our show was so important to them. I heard so many stories from fellow disabled people showing just how much people NEEDED this representation - and that meant so much to me as someone who spent the last 20 years of my life acting and singing and dancing onstage, who has myself felt at times that being center stage was something that might be in the past or out of reach now. In the past year I’ve emailed dozens of community theaters to ask if the rehearsal space was accessible, only to be ghosted or rejected before even going to auditions.

So to get to be a part of showcasing much-needed representation in our community felt in itself like an act of defiance. To be so full of joy and passion and determination that nobody can deny that disabled people DO belong on the stage felt like an act of defiance. And what better a theme to do that than One Piece?

Shoutout to my lovely group @heidihoneylite @eloraeverafter @passingwallflower @recklesscosplays for experimenting with me and figuring out choreo we could all be proud of! And an even bigger shoutout to @swamp.thyng and @survivethelight for making a kickass show and inviting me to be a part of it. I loved getting to create such meaningful art together! 🩷

I had such a lovely time performing in the @animateorlando Masquerade performance contest this past weekend, and I even had the honor of being awarded @astravoidcosplay’s Judge’s Award for my performance as Marceline! 🧛‍♀️👑🦇

This weekend was truly all about making the best of whatever was thrown our way - from food poisoning, to not only one but TWO broken airbrushes, to not knowing if I’d even be able to perform in the contest at all until the Friday of the con due to the lack of a ramp for the stage - but regardless of hurdles, it was wonderful to dip my toe back into the world of cosplay performance competitions now that I’m a full-time wheelchair user. It definitely brought back the flame and love of competitive cosplay performance, and I’ve already got so many ideas for the future! 💖

Shoutout to my fellow Judge’s Award winner @nicopico678 for your INCREDIBLE performance! Red instrument squad!!🤘🎸

And a HUGE shoutout to my forever Princess Bubblegum, my wife @omg.sabamfa for lifting me out of my chair and onto the edge of the stage so I could actually be seen! And for the sneaky little video clip here that she got of my performance! 🥰

Not to be dramatic, but this was one of the coolest moments of my life??? 😭🩷 Meeting and getting my OG bass prop signed by The Vampire Queen herself, @oliviaroseolson alongside my forever Princess Bubblegum @omg.sabamfa was such an amazing full-circle moment for me! 🥹🥰

Story time: Adventure Time was actually a huge part of my now wife and I’s early days, going on “not dates” watching it! 🫣😂 The very first cosplay we planned together ourselves was Marceline and Bubblegum, and we’ve done several more versions of them over the years from picnic versions to Renaissance versions. I also played Marceline in the @metrocon_fl 2019 Masquerade: Graduation show, in which I used this very bass guitar prop that is now signed and I can’t wait to hang on my wall. So Marceline has always been so incredibly special to me.

The morning this photo was taken, my airbrush broke so I had to last minute pivot and use water based paint (graciously provided by roomies aka saviors @wildlilflower and @silverkleptofox). When we finally got to the con, we raced back to see Olivia and there was a sign saying she’d be back at the exact time I was supposed to check in for the performance contest. So we zoomed to the contest check-in to ask if there was any way I could be a few minutes late, because this was SO important to me - and luckily they were the sweetest people ever (huge shoutout to contest staff member Kendall!), and we made it back to Olivia’s booth a few minutes before she got back. She was the coolest person and this will forever be a cherished memory! And then immediately after, I went on to win a judge’s choice award in the performance contest singing and playing ukulele live as Marceline with my own little rendition that I added a verse and some extra lyrics into of Marceline’s “Happy Ending Song”. How cool is that?? 🥹🩷

Today marks the end of Disability Pride Month, so here’s my “hot take” that SHOULDN’T be a “hot take”: Only disabled actors should play disabled characters.

“But it’s called ACTING!”

And there are millions of qualified disabled ACTORS. By choosing to cast a non-disabled actor in a disabled role, you’re sending the message that an able-bodied person was better for the role than EVERY disabled actor. There are already next to NO roles for wheelchair users. Being cast in a show with a physical disability is extremely rare, because casting directors can’t look past their “vision” of a show that doesn’t include visibly disabled actors. There is no shortage of roles for able-bodied actors. At ALL. Disabled actors are systemically counted out for MOST roles based on preconceived notions before even being given a chance to show skill.

As for roles that are not explicitly disabled - why CAN’T they be played by a disabled actor? Roughly 25% of the population is disabled. If you want to talk statistics, that means 1 in 4 people on stage SHOULD have a disability, if we’re trying to authentically represent the population. And if we’re not, then there should actually be no reason to discount disabled people at all.

The absolute bare minimum that can be done is ensuring disabled roles are played by disabled actors. It is not only the casting director’s job to cast disabled actors in disabled roles - but it is the job of non-disabled actors to not accept disabled roles. Yes, everyone is looking for their break and wants to make their way in the industry, but it is YOUR responsibility to take a step back and say, “Maybe I shouldn’t be the person to play this role.” If nobody takes a stand on our side, we have to fight so much harder just to be taken seriously.

To quote @bainbridgejenna, “Until disabled actors are considered equally for ALL roles (disabled and non disabled) I think disabled roles should exclusively be played by disabled actors, otherwise we will never be given the same consideration and clout necessary to “sell” a big box office run because we’ve never been given the opportunities necessary to have our stars rise high enough.” by @disfaybled
