Get it on your calendar now! You have a lot going on in #Portland between now & November 7th. You don’t want this event to get lost in the shuffle! It’s gonna be FUN!

Dance to records released or recorded in 1956!
Flame Vintage Vinyl Dance Party continues its Danciversary Series by celebrating the 70th anniversary of another explosive year in dance-oriented 45 rpm records!

1956 was the year rockabilly & rhythm ā€˜n’ blues completed their evolution into the rambunctious teen-centric Rock ā€˜n’ Roll sound. That was the year rock n roll went mainstream with the film ā€œThe Girl Can’t Help Itā€ starring the SINsational Jayne Mansfield & featuring performances by #LittleRichard, Gene Vincent, & other stars of the genre.

But there was a lot of other exciting music filling the dance floors that year:

- Afro-Cuban dance records were still riding the mambo & cha cha craze with stars like Tito Puente and #PerezPrado leading the way

- Johnny Cash scored his first massive hit with his distinctive, gritty rhythm-centric country music, while #PatsyCline was bounding into the scene with her early country bop style

- the Electric Blues recorded in Chicago, Memphis, & Louisiana was in the midst of its golden era

- The polyrhythmic R&B of New Orleans was in peak form

- Sister Rosetta Tharpe was laying down energetic gospel tracks featuring her influential rockin’ guitar style

- The Gospel-inspired R&B introduced by Ray Charles was evolving into its own genre which would be called Soul Music

- Vocal stars of the big band era like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington & others were still shining on records featuring an elegant jazzy style of pop music

ALSO hot šŸ”„ in 1956 - The Rock ā€˜n’ Roll scandal magazines! It would truly be a SCANDAL if you don’t come to the @kentonclub to help me celebrate the DANCIVERSARY of the year that changed American music forever!

Dress for the occasion!

Early morning downtown is its own scene. I am not a morning person, so I was definitely half asleep each morning as I made my way to work, which made many of the things I witnessed at that hour even more intense - death more than once.

What I did appreciate about working downtown was that it kind of felt like working in a mall (I imagine, I never was a mall worker) in that it felt as if all the downtown workers were my coworkers. It was like ā€œwe’re all in this work day together and we’re going to get through this, by god! And then we’ll get on yellowline for a harrowing ride home!ā€ by @djactionslacks

These are mostly taken during The Great Recession- the great thing about taking on a photo project like this during difficult times is that it encourages you to look for art in everyday life. It’s there for us when we need it, we just need to remember to keep a look out for it. by @djactionslacks

I hope it’s ok for me to continue sharing sets of photos from my flickr era. I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s ok, because I’m doing it anyway. I’m not suggesting these are art-worthy. Just photos

For three or four years I carried a quality camera around with me everywhere I went. At first it was for my photo blog, & then I launched into a project centered around photographing the remnants of the past...GHOSTS if you will.

It’s a shame when physical structures from the past are entirely erased. They play such a critical role in keeping us connected with the chronology and evolution of our collective existence.

Though many of the subjects of these photos are still around, some are gone, and a lot has changed. The photos I took in those years now serve as a document of a time in the PNW when the last vestiges of a bygone era were rapidly disappearing.

I have tons of photos from all over Portland (as well as Western WA and Western Oregon.) It takes time to compile them, but you may see more. by @djactionslacks

i just bought a ticket to go to this @menopunks event because I'm missing my Oly people quite a lot these days. I think I need to be around some people who have knew me in the ā€œbefore timesā€. I’m looking forward to being the least important person in the room. ā¤ļø I hope to see some of you there. Or somewhere else if you're not there. by @djactionslacks

As I mentioned, I found my old Flickr photo stream still active (they sent something out years ago indicating they were shutting down unused accounts or something). Anyways, here are some photos from my 2013 pilgrimage to Dollywood. I’ve said this before- it’s both the gayest place I’ve ever been while also being the place I’ve felt the most uncomfortable being gay.

I’m so grateful I went prior to 2016. I can’t even imagine how uncomfortable it would feel in this climate.

My appreciation of Dolly’s music was built record by record, based upon whatever I accumulated as a thrift store digger. So, I’d never heard ā€œ2 Doors Downā€ prior to visiting Dollywood. They pump music out over loudspeakers throughout the park. I swear, ā€œTwo Doors Downā€ was played every other song. I still wonder why that was. But I can tell you this, after hearing it that many times, it began to feel as if I was in a surreal gay horror movie after a while- Especially after catching a glimpse of the animatronic white gospel groups in the ā€œgospel museumā€.

Dollywood - there is NOTHING like it. You have to experience it in person to truly understand.

It was strange and glorious. I have no regrets .

Have YOU been there?

The amount of ā€œself assuranceā€ it takes to start saving things in your late 20s for the museum you’re going to create about yourself that you’re certain people will be motivated to visit in your not-easy-to-access hometown… And then making it reality 🤯 by @djactionslacks
