My formidable Nan 40 years ago with one of her treasured friends; a vividly pink-red flowered tree peony which she was proud to have grown from seed. Happy earthy birthday, fierce and feisty Libran one! I would say I miss you, but I sense still your fire and hear your voice. These days I appreciate its greater softness. And I’m just glad that I’ve managed to keep Peony alive and well, a living legacy of your green-fingered tending - you at your earthy-earthly best ✨🌺 😘 by @dogenazazena

Celebrating music-making magicians gracing the world, past, present, yet to be. In the pinky blue dawn I found myself listening to Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1, an old friend. Have a listen to the version with @ilvaeigus - she’s extraordinary 🥰 hats off to folk who become the violin as Ilva does - a little mermaid like, too (miraculous to me as a childhood violin player and wannabe ceilidh fiddler). Bruch composed this concerto when he lived in Koblenz. Makes sense, the city poised where the mighty Rhine-Rhein-Rijn and Moselle-Mosel meet and mingle. Here’s to humans becoming music where waters meet - and meeting earth, fire, air, spaces, consciousness inner and outer, too

Baile Atha Cliath - Dublin. There aren’t enough good adjectives to sing the praises of your people, places, waters - although we gave the praise singing a good go, compulsory tourist-ing in Temple Bar. Grit, courage, kindness, style, remembrance and an earthy friendliness I’ve only encountered living in Liverpool in my formative years. Growing a bigger heart for the Irish grandads who left, never to return, and the English, Scottish, Irish, Friesland granddads who colonised other places, other ancestors, similar devastation. Stop powering over one another humans, leave the land and creatures alone, it’s not the answer. May the current world craziness be the death throes, the last bit of the last leg in supremacist catastrophe. Keep on keeping on with the decolonising my loves. May the healing tears fill the bouncy Liffey. Would love to return, Dublin, if you’ll have us 🌻🙏🏼😘 taken in Dublin City by @dogenazazena

A little wild goose - or sunflower - chase through the large, striking Mount Jerome cemetery. We were looking for the grave of George Benjamin Nichols my 3x great grand uncle who was buried here in 1911. In the 1880s and 90s he was an English professional cricketer, playing 134 matches for Somerset after five first-class matches for Gloucestershire. He inspired a family love of cricket - at least most recently in my big bruv! In later life he wrote plays, so perhaps I got a writerly gene partly from him. I’ve no idea why he’s buried here in south Dublin, having lived most his life in Bristol and Taunton. Maybe it was the plays? I’ll keep searching.
Anyhow, after stumbling around in circles as an ominous storm brewed we were helped by friendly undertakers and a grave digger to find the plot, which we’d already walked past. George’s grave has gone. A Catherine Gibney is buried there now, it’s a shared plot and 100 years have passed. That was kind of strange - and a first.
What was funny and sweet was the bright yellow empty jug in the centre of the shared grave, poised to receive the sunflowers. I think Maria, my great great grandma would’ve liked that little synchronicity, George’s oldest sister, especially as a prolific market gardener and decorated flower arranger. When I’m back in the Shire I’ll take her some, too - there should still be some growing at the allotment🌻🙏🏽🌍 taken in Mount Jerome Cemetery and Crematorium by @dogenazazena

It’s been a blessing spending three days in ancestral healing ritual in the beautiful Burren Lowlands.

Words fall so very short! 14 of us from four lands circled, making connection with elder ancestors of blood, bone, and place.
We invited the wise ones’ counsel in tending personal, family, and community healing and the ruptures and harms over the millennia (colonialism, racism, patriarchy, human supremacy, class domination, etc), still shaping systems and our bodies. And dwelling with the rich lineage medicines and antidotes meeting and healing those, too.

Sweet memories of the tenderness, courage, friendliness, vulnerability, laughter, tears, creativity, receptivity, curiosity - helpful ‘ingredients’ as we bore witness to the cultural harms enacted by and enacted upon the kin of different folk in the same room, sometimes the same body, the lands beneath us, and beyond.

Deep dives in trying on forgiving, discovering what was ready to be forgiven, with respect and kind patience for what’s yet to shift.

Abundant prayers were made, songs sung in five tongues, and an offering easefully crafted and released between our hands. As the offering returned to the mystery and more songs were sung dragon flies swooped, blessing our efforts. Thanks too to our equine witness and many others: Bram, Shawnee, deer, robin, the bovine ones, Harvest Moon, oak, and the 5am mouse.

Profound, unforgettable thanks to awesome co-facilitator @cath_dunne, to Roisin and the good folk @studiofeasa_ SF for their bountiful hosting and feasts, to the ever amazing @danielfoor for teaching us so skilfully and heart-fully. To the wise ones whispering in my ears since I’ve had ears - and likely before that.

Onwards - fine tuning plans for intensives closer to home in Bristol. A one day taster in Jan and a three day intensive in Apr, both slowly filling - see website above for more info.

I’m beyond glad to be assisting the mentoring of the 9th cohort of the Ancestral Healing practitioner training at Ancestral Medicine. Easeful beginnings for all the trainees and all making the course possible…

May our lives be an engaging and enchanting prayer for the world ⭐️🙏🏼🌍 taken in Burren, Clare, Ireland by @dogenazazena

Whistle stopping with a visit to the tapestry, a distant blessing to and from Carn Ingli, a Paddington stare from Captain Ahab, and remembering Owen Young Jones, 4x GGF who spent his last days here. And remember - never mess with a mam-gu (or scrum halves) - if you know what’s good for you. taken in Abergwaun, Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom by @dogenazazena
