Suicide is the biggest killer in men under 5️⃣0️⃣.

Take that in.

Also, take in the fact that I might be considering a cheeky career change… say hello 👋🏽 to the England Rugby🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏉Team’s newest and smallest recruit 🤣

June🟰 Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

Jonny Wilkinson🟰 my most admired male mental health advocate ( I’m sure I am not alone).

Jonny Wilkinson CBE is the GOAT 🐐 Fact.

Why❓

MAYBE it’s because of…

👉🏽His impact on global sport. He is known for scoring the winning drop goal in the 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣3️⃣ Rugby World Cup Final and is one of the best rugby union players of all time 🏆

For me, it’s DEFINITELY because of…

👉🏽His impact on mental health awareness.

Depression in sportsmen is not an uncommon issue.

But, talking about it publicly very much is.

Jonny disrupted the space.

He has used his experience of an injury battle that triggered a deep depression to educate others on the importance of prioritising the health of our minds as much as we do with our bodies… and to not actually separate the two.

His book “Tackling Life” 📕 takes you through his quest for perfection and unattainable contentment.

His podcast 🎙️ “I am… with Jonny Wilkinson” highlights conversations about human potential, mental health and wellbeing.

🗣️ Jonny has wisely said:
“The inner experience is as good – If not better – than it was when I was doing all that[rugby sucess]. That same feeling is available to you 2️⃣4️⃣ hours a day if you manage your energy well.”

I totally resonate with this. Who else does❓

We all have a tendency to attach our wellbeing to external circumstances ( good or bad)… but innate wellbeing is an INSIDE JOB. I’ve also learnt that the hard way, having also experienced depression.

Here’s to all the men out there suffering in silence.

You are not alone.

You are not weak.

You are just human.

📞 Please reach out for help. Please talk.

We encourage people to talk about their mental health.

But when it’s our doctor, therapist or teacher, do we still see them the same way❓

As a psychiatry doctor who has experienced depression, this matters to me.

Needing support doesn’t erase someone’s skills.

This #worldmentalhealthday , “you can tell me” should mean “I’ll still see all of you.” 💗

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on the @londoneye and @stjohnswaterlooarts for another fantastic WOW Day of the Girl 🎡

We had the best time and were blown away by everyone’s passion, generosity and openness!

Right now it feels more important than ever to celebrate girls - their ideas, their ambitions, their joy and their limitless potential - while making sure they have the power, freedom and opportunities to turn those ambitions into reality 💥

Thank you to our Global Founding Partner Bloomberg for their ongoing support and to Clifford Chance whose partnership helped make today happen.

Reading the coverage of the Fonagy review, I keep thinking about the children I worked with during my year in CAMHS.

Including the under-12s at @greatormondst .

Getting assessments right matters. But we cannot let another polarised debate about diagnoses overshadow young people’s distress, or the support they need while waiting.

And as doctors, we need to examine our own attitudes too. Clinical curiosity and compassion should sit together.

My work as a @chimotrust trustee reinforces why earlier support in communities matters: trusted adults, connection and somewhere to belong, alongside specialist care when needed.

I hope this review changes what happens when a young person asks for help.

They should not have to become more unwell to be taken seriously.

This morning we took to the skies once more to celebrate Day of the Girl in classic WOW style 🎡

We brought together 150 girls and non-binary young people with 150 incredible mentors from across sport, finance, theatre, medicine, global development, law, media, government and more for WOW Speed Mentoring on the London Eye.

As they soared above London, and over so many of the iconic London institutions where generations of girls and women before them have been the pioneers of progress and where so much remains to be improved , the conversations flowed and the aspirations soared too 🤩

90,000 steps for mental health research! 👟💗

This October, I’m walking 90,000 steps to raise money for @mqmentalhealth , in honour of World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

As an NHS psychiatry doctor, I see why we urgently need more research into prevention, better treatments and improving the lives of people affected by mental illness.

Every £5, £10 or £50 makes a difference.

I’d be so grateful if you could donate, share or cheer me on! 💛

🔗 Fundraising link in bio.

Better mental health is possible, and research helps us get there.

On Wednesdays we wear pink 👀

You know I love wearing pink. This October, it carries extra meaning.

Proud to be a @wearfigs ambassador and to have been sent their breast cancer awareness collection:

🩷Fight Club Pink and F’ing Pink 🩷

This campaign champions earlier detection, access to care and support for people affected by breast cancer. FIGS is also donating another $50,000 to @letsfcancer to support prevention, early detection and patient support.

Behind every diagnosis is a person, with emotional needs as well as physical ones.

Wearing pink this October 💅🏻

Keeping that message in mind all year round💗

Shout out to the Queen @oriordanliz for helping shape this campaign 👸💝

“Men need to talk more.”

Yes. But I think we need to ask another question:

Where are we expecting those conversations to happen?

Men’s mental health support doesn’t always need to begin in a consulting room.

It might begin on a walk. At football. Making something together. Over coffee. Or simply seeing the same familiar faces every week.

Connection can come before disclosure.

And preventing suicide means thinking upstream about friendship, purpose, community and belonging, alongside providing excellent support when someone reaches crisis.

I’ve included some brilliant UK organisations doing exactly that.

Please add any I’ve missed below so we can make the comments another useful resource 👇

Save this for yourself or share it with someone who might need it.

Public speaking has been one of the biggest reminders in my life that confidence can be built.

From dreading reading aloud at school → to now genuinely feeling at home on a stage.

Not because the nerves disappeared.

Because I kept doing it anyway.

And somewhere along the way, fear became excitement, speaking became connection, and I found something I absolutely love🩷💛

What’s something you can do confidently now that once terrified you❓

Last month I started working in liaison psychiatry and I absolutely love it.

I think part of the reason is that I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie 😅

It’s fast-paced, unpredictable, emergency and crisis work…often chaos.

No two days are remotely the same.

But what I love most is the extraordinary breadth of humanity you meet.

In one shift, I can see someone who is 19 and someone approaching 100.

People from completely different backgrounds and with completely different stories.

I’ve met Holocaust survivors. People experiencing homelessness. People struggling with addiction. People who have attempted to take their own lives. People experiencing their first mental health crisis alongside people who have lived with severe mental illness for decades.

You’re often meeting someone on one of the hardest days of their life.

And somewhere amongst all of this human complexity and intensity, I try find these tiny moments for myself:

A coffee. Five minutes to sit outside. A laugh with a colleague. A moment to reset before the next referral comes in.

And obviously staying comfy and chic in my @wearfigs as a @figsambassador 🩵💛🩷
