I didn’t expect to be making such a statement in my first race back after 9 months without racing. Training has been going well, but I didn’t think it was going this well. After taking time completely away from triathlon at the end of last year, my main goal for training this winter was to keep training fun and enjoy the process of getting back into shape.

Safe to say I have accomplished those goals. I’m in the best headspace I’ve been in a really long time and while the result from St. Anthony’s this past weekend was stellar, that’s not the part I’m the most proud of. I proved to myself I still have a place in triathlon as an athlete, but more importantly, a competitor.

A big thank you needs to go out to all the people who believed in me even when things weren’t going well. This wouldn’t have been possible without you all!

Most triathletes spend their money in the wrong places. Here’s what I’d invest in first:
1. Good quality bike shorts and running shoes. These are the main contact points for the bike and run. Having dependable comfort in those two areas will make training and racing a much more enjoyable experience!
2. Basic recovery equipment is key if you want to be feeling your best over the long haul of training for triathlons. A foam roller, and a budget cupping set is a great investment to keep your body loose and feeling ready to take on consistent training.
3. A bike fit is a very important thing to do soon after you start training. Many injuries stem from improper bike fit and the subsequent compensation your body needs to make. Taking care of this early on in your training will put your body in a mechanically efficient position allowing you to get the most out of it!

Did I miss anything? What are your top 3?

July was a rollercoaster. The lows of sickness and inconsistent training, mixed with the highs trying Thai food, seeing friends and family, and beautiful views. Progress isn’t linear!

Grateful for the people in my corner, the opportunity to do what I love, and another month closer to my goals.

On to August. 👊

Tempo Tuesday on Lefthand is becoming a bit of a trend during this training block! Made it to the top today finally! The bike legs are finally coming around to the altitude and ready for a good block of training before racing again!

Blessed beyond measure to be out here living the dreams of 13 year old Drew!

P18 at Gulf Coast 70.3

A lot of positives to come away with and a lot of areas to improve on. Ejected a bottle twice before the 5 mile mark on the bike leading to wasting time going back to grab it and lost nutrition before I even got to the run. Despite that, I felt like I was racing until the last lap on the run.

After the swim being shortened by 60% is not my ideal scenario. Overall happy with the result after the last 4 weeks of inconsistent training, sleep, and recovery.

Ready to head out to Boulder to start training with @passionprojecttriathlon and really go all in to be the best I can be! taken in The Gulf of America by @drew.shellenberger

P8 at St. Anthony’s this weekend

Not exactly how I thought the race would play out, but chasing all day made me think outside the box on tactics and race plan. Fitness is in a good spot and I’m excited to race again in 10 days at 70.3 Gulf Coast. Swipe to see my secret weapon on the swim
