“There isn’t much about trauma or how it affects kids.”

Mike’s right. Continuing education doesn’t always cover actual, evidence-based instructional techniques and relationship-building strategies for supporting students.

But Backdrop to Success does.

Mike was one of nearly 300 educators who took my online course this summer. As a special education math teacher, he recognizes that when we understand trauma, we better understand student success.

Seeing it on a map makes it feel a little more real. 🥹💛

This summer, 300 educators from communities across Massachusetts participated in Backdrop to Success.

Each dot represents a place a participant came from, and behind those dots are educators making time to learn about trauma-sensitive classrooms, student belonging, and their own well-being.

I created Dr. MC’s Self-Care Cabaret in 2019, building on my doctoral work. Seeing this part of that work reach educators across the state is a moment I want to pause and appreciate. 🎭

To everyone who participated: thank you for bringing your experience, questions, and care to this learning.

Tired of toxic wellness telling you to push through pain? A nervous system-centered approach means listening to your body. Sometimes that’s rest; sometimes it’s gentle movement. It’s about what *your* body truly needs.

⚠️ Trigger warning: Eating disorders and bulimia.

Men experience eating disorders, too. @officialslystallone speaking openly about his experience helps challenge the stigma that keeps so many silent. You can’t see someone’s struggles by looking at their body. Everyone deserves compassion and support. 💛
