2024 deer season has come to a close and I am beyond grateful to have put my tag on this buck. I spent over a week with family enduring cold temps and low deer numbers trying to turn up a shooter before finding this buck.
I always set out to find a big mature mule deer… until I see a whitetail that gets me as excited as this one got me. It’s one of my favorite hunts of the year and I already look forward to next season. by @dylan.hunter.dowson

This year, I watched my cousin @brydon_peacock prepare for season in a way I hadn’t seen before. I could tell how much it meant to him to do everything he could to be ready for the moment.

Getting to be right there with him as he shot his first archery elk was far more awesome than shooting a bull the night before.

Beyond pumped to share that experience with you, see the hard work pay off, and repay the favor of cutting and pack out his bull. I owe you a few more @brydon_peacock… Stoked for next year. by @dylan.hunter.dowson

2026 MT Bull

My main goal going into this hunt was to spend more time hunting with my dad, cousin, and uncle. The older I get, the more I value those moments together in the field over punching my tag or finding the biggest bull possible.

I was blessed with the opportunity to do just that when, only a couple hours after arriving at elk camp on the first evening, I found this bull within bow range.
——

We got unloaded at camp with only a few hours of daylight left. I picked a spot close to camp where I’d found elk before and headed out, just hoping to locate elk on night 1.

Less than five minutes after starting to glass, I heard a bugle two drainages over. Another bull answered shortly after. They went back and forth as I made a big loop to get the wind right.
I eventually got within 100 yards of their bedroom, but they headed for water. They moved another half mile and stopped at water, just long enough for me to catch up.

With about 20 minutes of shooting light left, I closed the distance again. I bugled and both bulls turned and screamed back. I bugled again and quickly closed another 50 yards.

I caught the tips of antlers as he circled to my left. He came to 50 yards and we stared at each other for a minute. When he turned to leave, I drew and took a couple steps up as he stopped broadside in a gap between the trees.

He took a step as I released the arrow and I watched it disappear through him. He crashed through the trees and stopped about 100 yards away, standing for a minute before laying down. I watched until it was too dark to see and backed out.

At first light, I came back with my dad and cousin @brydon_peacock and found him dead in his bed. It got down to 30° that night so leaving him was an easy decision, but still caused a sleepless night.

Notching my tag the same night of showing up to camp wasn’t planned, but it gave me the opportunity to make good on my goal of spending more time hunting with family.

This was one of three bulls I was blessed to cut up and pack out over the next week.

Thank you, God, for another bull, a full freezer, and an incredible September in the elk woods. by @dylan.hunter.dowson

Rut report from onX Hunt’s Dylan Dowson, fresh off a week in Idaho with @bornandraisedoutdoors and a weekend in Montana.

The honest read: still slow. Several elk called inside 30 yards in Idaho, every one of them silent. Montana was spikes, close encounters, and one good bull on cows that wasn’t fired up yet.

Dylan’s bet is the last week of September into the first of October. That’s when they go nuts.

How’s the rut been for you so far? 👇 by @dylan.hunter.dowson

Mountain Goat hunting.
Something that, mistakenly, wasn’t necessarily at the top of my list for a while, but is now and will continue to be.

The places goats call home is humbling, challenging, and flat scary at times. There’s something about being in that kind of country for 10 days, living out of a backpack with the goats, that puts things into perspective.

I learned and grew a lot as a hunter and as a person during this one. Can’t wait to do it again someday. taken in British Columbia, Canada by @dylan.hunter.dowson

Still haven’t made it through all the photos from New Zealand to share, but these ones caught my eye while daydreaming about the experience.

Big bull tahr are incredible animals, but for me, the mountains are what make this hunt — which is why the backdrop gets the focus first.

Feeling incredibly blessed to have walked up on this bull, and in a place like this. taken in New Zealand by @dylan.hunter.dowson

He packed snacks. He packed his calls. His 4-year-old packed monster trucks.

@dylan.hunter.dowson has been waking up at 4:30am for years, hiking in the dark, and chasing sunrises. Now he’s doing it with his little one in tow, and the freezer means less than it ever has.

Right after the bird hit the ground, his son looked up and said: “I will never forget this day.” Neither will Dylan.

Some things are worth sharing.

Nothing quite like taking your 4 year old out and watching him take it all in.

Thomas told me right after that he wasn’t ever going to forget it. Me neither buddy.

Looking forward to watching this many years from now with him. by @dylan.hunter.dowson

New Mexico. Where everything wants to poke you, and getting cliffed out was more common than not.

One of the things I’ve grown to love about hunting is the places that it takes me. I’d never experience these mountains without a tag in my pocket for an animal that calls them home.

Even these pics don’t come close to how incredible and massive this country really was in person on a recent Aoudad hunt. taken in New Mexico, USA by @dylan.hunter.dowson
