Rut report from onX Hunt’s Dylan Dowson, fresh off a week in Idaho with @bornandraisedoutdoors and a weekend in Montana.

The honest read: still slow. Several elk called inside 30 yards in Idaho, every one of them silent. Montana was spikes, close encounters, and one good bull on cows that wasn’t fired up yet.

Dylan’s bet is the last week of September into the first of October. That’s when they go nuts.

There’s a big difference between looking at a piece of country on a map and actually knowing it.

Before a hunt, I’ll spend a lot of time studying terrain, access, boundaries, water, saddles, benches, roads and anything else that might help me understand how that country lays out.

Tools like @onxhunt help paint that picture before I ever get there.

I can mark access points, drop waypoints, study different routes, save maps for when I lose service, and start forming an idea of how I think animals might use the landscape.

But that’s still only part of the picture.

Boots on the ground are what make it come to life.

You start seeing the things a screen can’t fully show you.

The game trail you didn’t expect.
The wind doing something different than you thought.
The climb that looked easy on a map.
The pressure from other hunters.
The little pieces of terrain that suddenly make everything make sense.

That’s where preparation turns into experience.

And over time, those experiences start teaching you how to read country differently.

Technology can help us prepare.
It can help us make better decisions.
It can even help us see things we might have overlooked.

But it can’t replace woodsmanship, time in the field, or the lessons that only come from being there.

Hunting Idaho with @onxhunt and got to experience something pretty damn cool, calling in a wolf.

It was an experience I won’t forget, and it definitely makes you wonder how much wolf presence has to do with the elk behavior we’ve been seeing here.

Pairing the @sigsauerhunting ZULU6 with the @magviewgear platform, we were able to capture some pretty special footage of the whole experience. Can’t wait to share more from this hunt.
