We’re putting farmers, workers, and local consumers first— by creating a community owned, cooperatively run— grocery store, commercial kitchen & cafe. EAT — it’s basically Everything All Together.

A hundred years ago, Main St. Catskill had more than a dozen grocers and butchers.

Today, downtown has no grocery store, and not a single establishment specializes in fresh or local produce. Though many new businesses are moving to capitalize on the revitalization of Upstate New York, few are addressing the striking realities of generational de-industrialization, gentrification, economic struggle and lack of food access.

Co-operative Food Stores, or “Food Co-ops” offer an alternative model to the conventional grocery store standard. Empowering workers and consumers with the power to vote, co-ops emphasize a collaborative process directed by worker-owners and consumers, who have the option to own a share of the company.

In upstate New York, where organic farms surround small towns, it is somehow nearly impossible to find markets which actually sell local groceries to local consumers. Prioritizing New York City's demand for organic produce, the communities in between these large agricultural spaces are often neglected. Today, Catskill's grocers are Price Chopper, Walmart or the local Stewart’s gas station -– none of which prioritize fresh or local foods.

EAT Co-op is an attempt to address these local (and global) issues, by participating in a replicable model for providing food security. A co-operatively owned community grocer, kitchen & cafe, EAT will prioritize the needs of farmers, workers & consumers while giving back to local regenerative agricultural projects.

Mission & Vision :

EAT is a small scale co-operative & communally owned grocery store, providing fresh, local or organic foods to main street, while also highlighting and giving back to regional regenerative farm projects, by offering commercial kitchen rental and cafe access to farmers and makers.

We will also offer a variety of CSA and sliding scale payment models, that prioritize local farmers & consumers alike. We will process any unsold produce for value added products, like jams or canned goods-- offering a menu of soups, smoothies, and nourishing snacks to highlight local and seasonal foods, while securing a year round farmer's market for local growers to sell their produce directly to the community. Our Kitchen, will extend commercial kitchen status to farmers who would like to host farm dinners or pop - up dining experiences, while also allowing local farmers, caterers, or chefs to scale their professional food production. Finally, we will prioritize equitable pay for all of our employees, and commit profits to funding local regenerative land projects, with a focus on BIPOC Farm & Nature access. by @eat.catskill

This Memorial Day Help Us Build a Grief Garden for the most Legendary Chef and army wife in Catskill *

We are organizing a small community fundraiser to support someone who has quietly helped feed Catskill for decades. A longtime local chef and community figure, she has spent years cooking for us, caring for our community, building friendships, and contributing to the life of this town.

Earlier last year, she lost her husband.

She is a private and proud person and would not want attention focused on herself, so we are respecting her wishes by keeping this fundraiser anonymous.

Those close to her know that flowers have become an important part of honoring and remembering her late husband. Last year, friends helped bring flowers regularly, but this year we hope to create something more permanent.

She recently shared that she hoped to install a raised cinderblock garden bed all around her home, and I realized that together we could help make it happen but we need some support.

The goal is to build a huge garden for cuttings and remembrance — a space with raised planting beds, and flowers that can provide beauty, comfort, and blooms for years to come. A place where she can continue growing flowers to bring to the person she misses most without draining her personal finances which are fixed and limited.

She is also undergoing surgery this Tuesday, and any support is deeply appreciated during her recovery. While our primary goal is building the garden, any additional funds raised beyond project costs will go directly toward supporting her during her healing process as she will be limited from working.

We are hoping to raise approximately $4,000 to support materials, cinderblock raised beds, soil, flowers, and garden installation costs.

If this person has fed you, welcomed you, cooked for you, supported you or your family, or helped make Catskill feel like home over the years, we hope you will consider contributing. She is an absolute treasure and I hope we can collectively help her with this small act.
