Secrets of Haunted House 44 remains a bronze horror book where new collectors can get into the genre with a fantastic cover by one of the very best at a great price. There are only a few signed copies on the census and I’m the proud holder of this beautiful book!

Sometimes (most times) I strike out with picking up raw books online and believing I’m a grading guru, only to get humbled by CGC. So, I cut the runaround and heartbreak and went all in this beautiful, already graded HOM 217. All of Wrightson’s covers are great in their own ways but this book always stops me in my tracks whenever I see it.

Iconic. Timeless. Classic. Neal Adams bronze horror at its very best. Often cover swiped, but this is the original and was one of the first transition books for me that I picked up when I moved from superhero to horror.

This is one of THE books for me. Bronze Age key ✅ for an iconic character ✅ by one of the greatest artists ever ✅ and with an incredibly well written story ✅. All that aside, as if it weren’t enough, I love picking up books at the top of a price compression stack. What do I mean? There are usually a group of grades where there isn’t much difference in price between them. Then, all of a sudden, the very next grade up causes the prices to fall off a cliff. I usually go for the books just before that happens. The difference between a 9.4 and 9.6 isn’t much, but from a 9.6 to a 9.8, it’s huge. That’s opportunity!

Bring on the spooky season and my favorite genre in comics! This sweet book is House of Secrets 139 published by DC in 1976 and features a classic Wrightson scene set on a deep black cover. The scarecrows are ready, and so am I!

Go ahead and put this up at the very top of Tom Sutton’s best work. Eerie 17 from Warren in 1968 features an incredible cover, which I believe is Tom’s very first, and a perfect trade dress. The interior story “Dressed to Kill” also features art by Tom and his biography and self portrait are on pg. 21. Magazines haven’t quite hit yet but this is an absolute gem and must have, IMO, for any Sutton collector.

Well, well, well…what do we have here?!? It’s another epic Sutton book—Ghostly Haunts 39 🙌🏽. I remember seeing this book so many times and passing on it. Not anymore! There is so much detail on the cover that you could almost miss it, but the classic horror trope is right there—a woman in a red dress (Destiny Fox) being sacrificed to the river monster Whahanee. Steve Ditko drew the interior art for that story as well that is entitled “Moon of Vengeance.”

Daredevil bronze horror anyone? Not sure if this book is on your radar, but it’s a fantastic work with Klaus Janson cover art and a Marv Wolfman story. In it, Daredevil faces off against Death-Man and his voodooo centered human sacrifice scheme. Published by Marvel in February of 1976, these books are TOUGH in high grade with that beautiful black cover.

Ask me who the two most underrated horror artists are of the Bronze Age and I’ll tell you Jack Sparling and Gray Morrow. I love Gray’s attention to detail and freeze frame capturing of the dynamic. The coloring and framing here with this cover creates a perfect vignette. Red Circle Sorcery 6 published by Archie Comics on April 10, 1974. I just love it!

Spooky season is here! Neighbors are putting out Halloween decorations, Octoberfest beers are on store shelves, and my favorite genre of comics is the focus of the hobby! It’s also the perfect time to pick up a copy of this fantastic first appearance of Werewolf by Night, which has been an object of pursuit for me for a long time. This book is glorious with that classic Neal Adams cover and the late Gerry Conway’s wonderfully written story inside. Seriously, it’s a great read!

Bring on the horror books! Cheers!🍻

I’ve always loved this book! It’s one of the first horror books that stopped me in my tracks when I saw it. Fantastic Neal Adams art that has that super creep factor—only the dog knows! Despite that, I never managed to pick up a copy until recently. There are only three signed copies on the census—this one, however, is unique. It’s the only signed copy from Neal’s personal collection and I couldn’t be happier to have it.

Following my buddy Brian’s lead (@comicsandwine) here’s a Sutton Saturday gem that just arrived this past week. Hard to track down Haunted 26 with an outstanding werewolf cover. A recent 9.8 sale just hit $3500, although this one’s not close to that, I’m still pumped to add it to my ever growing Sutton collection.
