But beneath the surface? 🔍

Power. Culture. History. Relationships. Norms. Unspoken expectations.

So don’t just ask:

“What is going on around me?”

You watch a woman go silent in a meeting and your brain writes the story in half a second. Arrogant. Cautious. Insecure. Three different women, same exact pause, three completely different verdicts, and every single one came from you, not from her.

That’s the part we don’t talk about. Every behavior you witness passes through a filter first, your history, your fears, your own definition of what “strong” or “difficult” even means. You think you’re seeing them. You’re seeing your version of them.

Decoding is not interpreting with extra steps. Interpreting is still you, projecting. Decoding is observing without labeling, asking without assuming the answer, listening for what someone actually means instead of the cue that confirms what you already expected.

This isn’t about excusing everything either. It’s about accuracy. You cannot lead, negotiate, or truly connect with a person you’ve already rewritten in your own image.

Decoding them starts the moment you stop deciding what they mean and start finding out.

What do I mean by “Decoding the self”?

Most people think leadership starts with action.

It doesn’t. It starts with Decoding.

Before you can navigate anything, you have to understand what’s actually happening and not what you assume is happening….not the story you’ve told yourself for years!

That’s what decoding the self means to me.

It’s OBSERVING before you react. Creating enough space to notice your thoughts, your body, your patterns, before you respond to any of them.

It’s ASKING yourself the questions most people avoid.

It’s LISTENING to the answers with real presence, not just the thoughts, but what’s underneath them.

It’s MAKING SENSE of what you find. Connecting it back to your values, your triggers, the patterns you keep repeating without noticing.

And from that awareness, something shifts. You stop reacting on autopilot. Same situation, different you, different outcome.

That’s the whole point. Decoding isn’t a step you complete once. It’s the discipline that makes everything else, navigating, choosing, leading, actually intentional.

You can’t lead what you haven’t decoded.

It starts with awareness.

Awareness of what is happening within me.
Awareness of what is happening within others.
Awareness of what is happening around me.

That’s why Leadership Intelligence starts with Decoding.

Because before I choose how to respond, communicate, influence or act, I need to become aware of what is really going on.

Decoding enables awareness.
Awareness enables intentional choice.

And intentional choice changes the way we lead.

Leadership doesn’t need another label.

For years, I’ve led across countries, cultures, crises, conflicts and complex organizations and very often in environments where there was no playbook and where complexity made certainty impossible.

Looking back, I realized there was a pattern in how I had learned to lead.

Decode. Navigate. Amplify.

Decode is the art of developing awareness. Of yourself, of others, and of the system around you: its dynamics, relationships, constraints, opportunities and unwritten rules.

Navigate is the capacity to consciously and intentionally choose how to move within that system. How to respond, communicate, influence, decide and mobilize the leadership capabilities the situation requires to create impact.

Amplify is a way to take that impact beyond yourself: through the people you develop, the relationships you build, the change you enable, the systems you influence and increasingly, through technology and AI.

I call this Leadership Intelligence.

It isn’t another leadership label or another definition of the kind of leader we are supposed to become.

It is the framework that emerged from more than two decades of my own experience leading across very different countries and complex environments.

And it is why I believe it can be particularly powerful for Women Leaders operating in complexity.

Because complexity requires seeing more clearly, choosing more intentionally, and creating impact that reaches beyond us.

How many leadership labels have you heard of ….and how many do we actually need?🤦‍♀️

Transformational. Authentic. Servant. Adaptive. Visionary….The list never ends and still, none of them tells you what to do on a Tuesday when the room goes quiet and a decision can’t wait.

The real skill isn’t picking a label. It’s knowing which capability the moment is asking of you and having the self-awareness to deliver it.

That’s Leadership Intelligence: Decode. Navigate. Amplify.

Not label #101.

But the intelligence to know “What does this situation require from you?”
