A brief family reunion to show my parents “Is it still the same down Gainsborough way?”, a series of illustrations exploring our family, divorce and human experience. The whole project was very last minute, and in the future I plan on continuing it to make a picture book, but for now it served as an opportunity to start a conversation with my parents on how their breakup has impacted me.
Awkward but worth it 🙈

Lately, I’ve been trying to start my mornings with warm up sketches as part of my research into coal mining. This is one I did last week, based on “Boy Miner”- a photograph by Lewis W. Hine (taken between 1903-38).
Historically, many children worked in the coal mines, with their wages often going straight to their parents. The “Victorian Gallery” at @ncmme_miningmuseum was an eye-opener into the lives and conditions they worked in…

I’m very behind on my to-do list and messages (will reply everyone soon i promise), but wanted to log on with it being the end of summer term (for me, at least):

I thought spring term was a whopper, but my goodness this one’s been a whopper supreme. Very intense with very long days, but sooo worth it. I have been so inspired by everyone’s work and ethic, and the classes- I think- have been incredibly constructive. COLOUR was my goal, and I tackled it with everything I had. And with that, I’ve inadvertently tackled my other point of discomfort: digital art. It’s by no means perfect or where I want it to be, but I feel I have made so much progress and am much more confident now. If I hadn’t have bit the bullet and just gone straight to paper with my oils back in April, I would have continued shying away from it.

Thank you to all my RDS friends and well done for getting through term 2 (and of course to the tutors :))

Tomorrow is the first day of my new job, so everything seems to be happening at once. My friends, I will get in touch very soon, and I look forward to what the summer brings us all.

Take care,

El x

I spent this afternoon testing out new colour palettes whilst watching the last round of the Women’s Six Nations (very tense, so multitasking helped).
I mainly used the Zorn palette, and appreciated the limitations. I did, however, overwork the painting- I’m going to restart it now I am familiar with this palette (when this will be, though, I can’t say 🫠).

A 45 minute life painting from this week’s “Portraits and Self Portraits”, inspired by artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s use of colour and contextual elements to create narrative.
Oil paints as usual.

2 hours wip from today’s Drawing: Composition and Colour class, following the theme “House”. Got lots of ideas I want to run with, but this was today’s outcome.
