The last piece of work from term 1 of the oddy: some dip pen studies of ‘Ugetsu’ (1953), dir. K. Mizoguchi. Drawing from Film class.

The Spring Term has been intense, tiring, but so much fun. I’ve met lots of brilliant artists, who I’ve learnt from as much as the lessons themselves. Looking forward to a bit of a break before cracking on with two biographical comic projects, and an animated film. 🎬 ⏳

Materials: dip pen, @sennelier1887 Drawing Ink (bistre 449), tiny miniature brush.

Today: 6am start- got some inking done, had my last 1:1 tutorial (😢), epic etching workshop, finished reading my book (‘Spiral Cage’, Al Davison), hung out with friends, publication meeting and concluded with a burger (and migraine 🤒). Oh, and today was the hottest first day of May on record? Felt it.
The etching is of the same comic page I inked this morning, excited to see how it turns out. Thank you @samberryillustration for the last photo 📸 feel very profesh.

For my unit 9 research project, I am exploring my coal mining heritage, specifically in South-West Yorkshire for my family. As time has been going on, I’ve narrowed down my research to the 1884/5 Miner’s Strike. This is a comic I made trying to visualise a quote from Ian Metcalfe, a flying picket from Markham Colliery in Derbyshire, who’s recounting what he saw at the start of the Battle of Orgreave.
My tutor challenged me to try making a comic using a paintbrush whilst being as spontaneous as possible, and that’s what I did here. The only exception was the facial features as they were too small for my clumsy hands-and-paintbrush combo.
More to come…

For the fifth prompt of #inktober2024 “binoculars”, I thought back to the binoculars I used to play with in my old childhood bedroom, and how the view from my window changed over the years. Made using black india ink, dip pen and brush on hot press watercolour paper (A5).

Alas, I was not competent enough in maths and science and thus my dream was cut short… 🦈🐠

Here’s the comic for day 4 of #inktober2024 for “Exotic” (my line of thinking was the exotic fish). I tried adding some dry-brushing for textures but it looks a mess now imo. Oh well, learning curve.

Day 3 of #inktober2024 and this time it’s “boots”. I had so many different ideas for this one, but in the end went for this to fit the format of the series, however I plan on turning my other plans into comics later…

Here is the comic that I made for the second prompt of inktober- “discover”. Me, my mum and our family friend went on holiday to Turkey in 2012, and this comic is based on a true (and frankly horrific) experience we had at a beach. None of us can remember which beach it was or what the species of crabs were, but to be honest we didn’t stay around that wall long enough to get a good look at them.
I did face my fear of crabs a few years ago when I held a hermit crab, but I was still freaking out internally… 🐚

Fumin’.
I last took part in inktober in 2017, and lasted about a fortnight? I thought that this year I’d do as many mini comics inspired by the prompts!
Here’s day one- “backpack”. Based on a true story that happened right as I came out of the @inqcomicfair 🦅💩🎒.

my next step is to make some photocopies, cut panels out and experiment with colour, media and layouts; the paper here is A4 sized but I don’t know whether I’ll reduce that or not… 👒

I was on the bus the other day, just passing by Aldwych when I heard some commotion outside. I looked up from my book (‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, which is amazing btw please read it) and saw a family whom I assume recently watched the new ‘Deadpool VS Wolverine’ film, because the lad was trying to take his brother’s eye out with some makeshift claws from coffee stirrers. It reminded me of when the 2008 X-Men film came out and me and my mates used pencils for our Wolverine claws, much to the teachers’ distress…
