Your pelvic floor muscles are not the same as the other muscles in your body!

I see the comparison of the pelvic floor to the biceps a lot when describing tension & lengthening which I think is a great analogy!

I just don’t see enough people talking about how DIFFERENT the pelvic flooor muscles are than other muscles (like your bicep), and I wanted to add some nuance to that convo.

The pelvic floor muscles are bit more high maintenance 😘

Also— I am super committed to no longer using chat gpt for IG captions (all of ur fav influencers are doing it, if u haven’t noticed) in an effort to maintain authentic communication with you all. Thx for reading! by @seher.dpt

So many people have had negative (or even traumatic) experiences around their pelvic region involving healthcare providers.

Whether it was that things weren’t explained to you clearly,

or that a procedure was rushed even though your body needed more time

or that you felt like you had to say yes because your body was saying no…

You learned to override your body’s signals to be a “compliant” patient.

Compliance is not the same as consent though !!!!

AND

It’s definitely not the same as enthusiastic consent.

As a trauma informed provider, I’m 100% looking for enthusiastic consent.

Bc if it’s not a “YES, I’m ready,”…. Then it’s a “no”.

I’m not tryna kegel-slander bc I respect the history of where it came from and how it has helped women.

Kegels are the OGs of pelvic floor strengthening and when doctors started prescribing kegels instead of surgery, it was a game changer for women’s health.

however, that was in 1940s.

Times have changed and we have progressed!!!

Pelvic floor Therapist have moved on from prescribing just kegels for Pelvic for strengthening.

MOST people with pelvic floor symptoms need more.

It’s outdated. by @seher.dpt

If you’ve been on a healing journey dealing with chronic illness, you may have experienced some form of medical gas lighting….

Just bc your provider cannot immediately figure out what the issue is doesn’t mean that everything is fine.

Your symptoms are real!!

Your doctor is only human— it’s not their job to “fix” you and to know exactly what’s happening with your body at all times. Unfortunately, treating a human being is complex!!

However, it’s their job to validate you, listen to you and to be a “team” with you to start to figure shit out.

As a PT (not a medical doctor), there’s only so much that I can do. By this point though, I have enough experience working with “complex” or niche health diagnoses that I can strongly say that I am a good team player and I can help refer you out to a specialist.

Sometimes healing is a journey and step 1 is ownership and self-advocacy IMO! by @seher.dpt

What deep core activation looks like on a pregnant woman !! (She’s got twins on the way!!)

Notice how she’s able to “HUG THE BABY” and wrap/loft up her entire belly and then slowly release it back down. She has great concentric and eccentric control!

Having a strong connection to your pelvic floor and core can help with birth/labor prep, pressure management, reducing the severity of diastasis recti and overall pregnancy related pain. 🤰

I always love to see this on a pregnant belly because it’s so fun to witness !

In an effort to limit Instagram from showing my content to the wrong audience and keeping it women centered, here are my keywords:

This is what one-on-one coaching looks like!!

Here is a snippet of a session I had with a dancer who has urinary leakage with shuffling movements (stress incontinence).

We have already addressed:
- Breathing mechanics
- Pelvic floor awareness
- Proper deep core and pelvic floor activation AND relaxation
- Coordination on the table (not with gravity challenge)

And we are currently working on…
- Pressure control
- Landing mechanics
- FOOT STUFF!! 👣 Foot contacts and foot control because our feet affect everything else up the chain.
- Coordination in standing / against gravity / with load

In future sessions, we will add unpredictable movements, quicker coordination & some impact 😄 by @seher.dpt

Pain at the entry is probably the most common complaint I get in office when it comes to seggs!!
Because of high nerve endings + hormonal factors, I see this a lot in post partum, menopause and ppl who have been on prolonged birth control, or with any hormonal condition!

I’ll be dropping part two tomorrow!
