If your business has ever had a Pysch injury claim then you are already feeling the pinch and likely saw your premiums go through the roof.

Two years ago I worked with a small community based organisation. Most of the team had gone off on Pysch claims. Every claim was accepted. The organisation ended up closing its doors. The evidence was mainly he said she said. Not to mention a few very reasonable emails asking the employees to do their jobs or provide information about why certain tasks were not completed.

No screaming in the corridor. No public shaming or repeated behaviour.

The problem was this client didn’t know how to respond to the claims. They didn’t understand they had the right to dispute them.

And they are no alone, most businesses don’t know what their rights are.

That’s why we are running a webinar on Wednesday 28th October at 12:30pm answering all your questions around how to deal with claims and how the system works.

Comment webinar. And we will send you link to join.

Little Emily had such big dreams… and here I am, living them every single day. 🥹

LOOOOLLLLLS.

But seriously guys, I do this shit for sport.

I’m the smiling assassin of HR. The velvet sledgehammer. The chess master quietly moving the pieces while everyone else is losing their shit.

My job? Make sure the little guy has some chips up their sleeve.

Know the rules. Know when to bend them and always on the side of small business. That my MOFO jam. taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @emilyjaksch

In April 2025 Queensland rail terminated the employment of a train driver that had a conviction for drug possession.

He put in a claim and won $30k in compensation as he said his 8 ball a day coke habit was outside of work and therefore was not relevant to whether he could do his job safely.

This is the kind of fuckery we are dealing with in our IR system in this country.

The system is stacked in the employees favour and businesses cannot win. It’s an absolute joke.

Imagine this guy was allowed to continue to drive the trains had an accident and killed people. QLD rail would be dragged.

Tell me what you think should this guy have kept his job or were they right to terminate him? taken in Australia by @emilyjaksch

I saw a post on LinkedIn by @justineyoul.thefounder this week and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

I really resonated with her saying she gets invited to more “women in business” events than she can count. Me too and I’ve spoken at them, attended all the lunches and brunches and received all the cute little goodie bags. But Justine asked the question that might get us both in a bit of trouble.

If the goal is inclusion then why do we keep creating separate rooms????

I’ve always had mixed feelings about labelling female founders mumpreneurs, bossbabes and girlbosses. And often all these events do is bang on about how it’s still a man’s world and other fluffy topics that aren’t really starting the right conversations on propelling females in business and giving us access to the rooms and opportunities we need to be in.

I think a lot of female founders have fatigue around being identified by gender first rather than by what we are doing and achieving. We are simply business owners just like the rest of em.

Here’s what I found when I went digging. The deals are still getting done on the golf course and in the footy box. Men only clubs still exist. And the women who go furthest have a strong circle of women AND a seat in the wider room.

So the circle absolutely matters. But it’s can’t be the whole plan. I would also say it’s important to choose carefully who you surround yourself with.

Is your circle talking about the right things and focusing on the needle movers in your industry? not just complaining about how hard it is without having some focus on the solutions.

Are women’s only events lifting us up, or keeping us off to the side?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Side note: You never ever hear men labelling themselves as male founders and I sometimes think all this does is tokenise female business ownership and is it helpful??? taken in Australia by @emilyjaksch

Is it just me? Or do all my menopause girlies also have a special draw full of these kinda empty but just a lil bit left vessels of calm and life force in their woman cave?

Cause WTF I can’t finish them. I can’t throw em out. But I absolutely need em. Like a little weighted blanket of unhinged support.

Well hello everyone.

My name is Emily and I will not stop calling out the government for what they are methodically doing to small businesses in this country.

I have been in the trenches with the SME community for 16 years and IT HAS NEVER BEEN HARDER to run a business and employ people in Australia.

Some may find my content offensive but all I’m doing is vocalising what every small business owner is thinking and feeling.

There is so much bullshit compliance and red tape that we have become a nanny state. Over taxed, over regulated and the new rules and legislation just keeps coming.

Guys I am in your corner. This is the fight worth having. We gotta stick together and keep calling out what is happening.

Just checking in to see whether any of you got a guaranteed pay rise year on year, paid flex time and a paid Christmas break this year? 🙃

No? Me neither.

The Australian Public Service is the biggest it’s ever been. And now the APS union wants 5% a year minimum for the next 3 years. And the fight right now is over a standard 7.5 hour day most of them already work.

Meanwhile 90% of private sector jobs saw no wage change last quarter.

The APS is the biggest it’s ever been, meanwhile we just hit 1 trillion in debt and one of the biggest governments expenditures is servicing this debt, funding the public service workers and also welfare.

Send this to a business owner who’s sick of funding it. 👇

Just a little life update. Spent the day on Sunday helping my husband work on this little Granny Flat we are building for my parents.

We have converted our existing Workshop / shed into a two bedroom tiny home. In 6 weeks Tim has almost got the place to lock up.

It’s so exciting and feels like a new beginning for my parents and our little family.

Cannot wait for the big reveal. It’s going to be so worth it.

Instagram is a wild place where many founders and gurus are proudly posting about their successful businesses and perfect lives making their business look like it’s humming and printing money.

The truth. Most businesses are not sexy and insta worthy. And although SME’s are the back bone of the economy many business owners don’t pay themselves a proper wage.

True leaders often eat last. And it’s not getting any easier to operate here and make money.

Business is often not glamorous it’s a daily game of let’s see how expensive my new idea is and whether or not we can make the numbers work to stay alive.

It sometimes feels like the hunger games and in this era I don’t know who business owners are more scared of. The ATO or the FWC or maybe even its employees. LOLLLL

Tag a business owner who needs to see this kind of normal.

And to all the founders who are killing it. No shade. Respect cause I know most of you have scars to prove how you got there.

Sorry this is a long one. But if you are a small business owner in Australia and you are feeling overwhelmed by the level of compliance then I’m not surprised because this is my full time job and even I’m struggling to keep up.

This government is purposefully attacked small business owners. Pitting employees against their employers so much so that their own system is buckling under the weight of claims.

It has never felt harder and more expensive to employ people in this country.

10 new acts of parliament around IR reform and 29 substantive law changes. It honestly feels intentional and every single one of these changes and rights is funded by YOU the small business owner.

Every change a great headline for the government but at what expense? The economy is tanking. Productivity is at an all time low. Job growth has stagnated.

And they aren’t done, already next year 2 new changes to be implemented! I am honestly done.

Share this with every single business owner you know. Not just to have a bitch. But to remember what we are up against and what we need to do to instigate change.

We deserve better. taken in Australia by @emilyjaksch

Here are some of my musings…

The figures we should be most concerned about is the number of businesses that are now non employing…

This is the number that is keeping me awake at night…

Australia actually gained 85,130 businesses last year.

Only…

83,105 were non-employing businesses.

Only 2,025 were employing businesses.

So the number of businesses employing Australians grew by just 0.2%, while non-employing businesses grew by 4.8%. And I’m no fucking economist but I’m not surprised.

Because business owners are done. They feel like the system is stacked against them. It’s almost impossible to sack people now given the number of avenues employees can use to make claims against you.

But I think we should at least be able to ask the question:

Are we making it too hard, too expensive and too risky for small businesses to employ people?

Over the last 6 years IR reforms have added or changed obligations around casual employment, the right to disconnect, contractor arrangements and intentional wage underpayments. (Fair Work Ombudsman)

Some of those protections may be entirely reasonable.

But regulation always has a cost, and pretending there is no cumulative burden on small employers doesn’t help workers either.

Workers need good employers.

Small businesses need good workers.

We’re not supposed to be enemies.
