In 2022 I was sitting at my desk working from home. Just a normal day. I got up to make a coffee and suddenly my heart started racing. My chest felt tight. I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack. I was alone and I didn’t know what to do. I remember sitting back down trying to breathe and all I could think was “I can’t keep living like this.”

That was the moment everything shifted.

Through my 20s and early 30s I was extremely overweight. Drinking too much. Unhealthy. Tired. Not showing up for my life.

I made the decision to have weight loss surgery. Some people think that is cheating or a shortcut. I understand why they feel that way. But I want to be clear. The surgery helped me lose weight. It did not build the fitness I have now. It did not run the kilometres. It did not get me to a marathon. It did not get me to Kona. I changed my life. I did the work.

I lost 80 kilos. I started moving my body. I tried everything. Paddle boarding, gym, golf. Just trying to find joy again. Then I found running. I ran further and further. Eventually I ran a marathon. And I wondered what else I could do.

So I set my sights on Ironman. I started with a 70.3. I finished, but I couldn’t run the half marathon because I was injured. Later I learned my leg was badly fractured. I spent six months recovering and then developed DVT as a complication.

But I wasn’t done.

I got a coach. I came back. I trained for Ironman Australia. I finished the race but the swim was cancelled so I didn’t officially become an Ironman. I knew I wasn’t finished.

I went to the roll down ceremony. I got a Kona slot.

I trained all winter. Back to back Ironman builds. Heat training. Hazmat layers. Early mornings. Long nights. I put everything into it. Time. Money. Energy. Heart. I backed myself even when it didn’t make sense.

I flew to Kona. I stood on that start line. The same girl who once thought she was having a heart attack at her desk. I became a Kona finisher.

What it feels like to finally achieve your dream in the most spectacular, brutal, unforgettable way possible.
This was the moment I stopped chasing it and became it.

I did it on the world stage with some of the best women in this sport, in conditions that were every bit as harsh as they say.
It was raw, it was emotional, and it was everything I’d ever imagined and more.

My race didn’t exactly go to plan, and I’ll share more soon about the challenges that came with that.
But honestly, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
I became an Ironman, and I earned it. 🖤

When you have a plan in your head, you start writing the story before it happens. This race was meant to be the final piece of the puzzle.

It’s been a big year, and Ironman training has been exactly what I needed to keep me level. I’ve loved every bit of it. I’ve never felt stronger, and I’ve never made more progress than I have this year.

For the first time ever, I was going to line up and actually have a crack. It’s always been “can I finish?” This time I knew I’d finish. The question was how well I could do, and I was so excited to find out.

But it wasn’t meant to be. I had an accident, right at the back end of a long brick, fatigued, probably not paying enough attention. There’s a lesson in that, and I’ve learnt it. It still stings.

This decision has been really hard. The old Emma would have lined up. She probably wouldn’t have even seen a physio. She would have done whatever it took to get to that start line.

I know, because I’ve done it. I raced Port Macquarie with a broken leg, and it led me down an awful path. Six months of recovery, a DVT, starting again from scratch. I was alone for a lot of it, and it was one of the hardest times of my life.

I can’t put myself through that again. I know I could probably get round, but the risk of doing real damage, being in serious pain and having to get myself home and look after myself and my doggos just isn’t worth it.

So it’s not my year here. But I’m so excited to be on the sidelines cheering on everyone I know who’s racing. I’ll also be on the panel at the women’s breakfast, so if you’re there, come and say hi 👋

And I’ve had something up my sleeve that I wasn’t going to share until after IM Australia.

I will still be completing an Ironman this year.

Stay tuned. More to come 💪

I was starting to feel pretty clear about my decision. Today I took a step back.

This is so hard. If I’d never had the scans, I’d never know what I’d actually done.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. But we’re dealing with facts now, and now that I know them, I need to deal with them properly.
The reality is I’m not running pain free. The pain is minimal. Very manageable. But there’s a little something there.

The side I ruptured isn’t the problem. It’s the inside of my ankle. My ATFL is one of the ligaments that keeps the ankle stable, and right now it’s not doing its job. So my ankle moves around more than it should, and the inside of the joint is copping the extra load. That’s where the pain is coming from.

It just needs a little longer to get stronger.

Could I run 10km like this? Yes. An hour? Yes. Probably two. But how would I go in a marathon off the back of 180km on the bike? And even if I made it to the finish line, what would my recovery look like after?

That’s the biggest question I’m facing right now.

What longer setback would I be willing to accept to race Ironman Australia?

Jury’s still out. Physio tomorrow. 🧡

Tomorrow is the World Champs.

I’m lucky enough to have a 50 minute video of my entire IRONMAN day, and tonight I sat down and watched the whole thing.

Honestly? It’s everything. 🥹❤️

Huge thanks to @jimedia_ for being out there with us all day and capturing it.

This was the day I became a different person.

Unless you’ve done it, I don’t think you can understand what it’s actually like. I still watch it back and think, wow. I kept running. I kept going. I’m not someone from an athletic background. I’m not “a typical athlete.” But somehow, on that island, I did every single thing I needed to do to get to that finish line

And I walked away knowing that anything I want, I can make happen.

This year has arguably been the hardest of my life. I’ve completely transformed it, and that’s been painful and terrifying, but also really exciting. And it keeps taking me back to this race. That day taught me how to endure. How to sit with discomfort for hours and keep putting one foot in front of the other. How to be okay when it’s hard.

So when things feel heavy, I remember Kona. I know I’ll always be okay. I know I’ll always keep going. Because I did it there, and some days I still can’t believe I did.

Here are a few moments from the day I want to share 🥹❤️❤️

To everyone racing on the Big Island, I’m wishing you the absolute best. I can’t wait to watch. And whatever happens out there, be so incredibly proud of yourself. 🌺

I know what the right decision is. I actually do. I know the logical, correct call for my race.

But that doesn’t make it easy. And it doesn’t mean I don’t want to do something different.

This is an awful place to be.

You can put on a brave face. You can do all the things. You can keep fighting. But the reality is most of us go through this at some point. You put in the work, and then one tiny thing takes it all away. And it really hurts.

There’s not much anyone can do to make you feel better. Your village on the sidelines gets the pain, but they also see the rational side and steer you towards what’s good for you long term. That doesn’t make it any less painful in the moment. And the logically correct decision doesn’t always feel like the right one for you.

I keep swinging back and forth and it’s exhausting. I can’t even hand the decision to someone else, because my coach and my physio have spelt it out pretty clearly. I’m the one who’s still unsure.

And if one of our athletes was in my shoes, I’d be giving them the exact same advice.

It’s just very different when you’re the one in it.

The first time someone called me an influencer, it gave me the ick. I pictured someone flogging cheap skincare with a “hey babes” vibe. That’s not me.

When I started this page, it was never about influencing anyone. It was about being brave enough to try, and sharing it gave me a reason to keep going.

What I didn’t expect was that it would help other people believe they could do it too. I’ve had thousands of DMs from people saying that seeing me do it gave them permission to try.

Because for a lot of us, especially those who don’t come from a sporting background, triathlon is intimidating. It’s confusing, it can feel elitist, and you can feel like the only one with no idea what you’re doing.

So sometimes you need a chief idiot to make it safe for everyone else. 🙋‍♀️

There’s been some chatter lately about “influencers.” So let me be clear. I wear that title as a badge of honour.

And honestly? If I was faster, I’d probably have less influence, because I wouldn’t be relatable to the 90% of people out there giving this sport a go.

So yes, I finished over an hour behind my age group winner. And I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. ☕💛

13 days to Ironman and I may have gone a little rogue today 🙈

Took the new @synergywetsuits Hyperion wetsuit for a test swim and honestly? I’m obsessed. It feels fast, it feels comfy, and I didn’t want to take it off. Huge thank you to Synergy for looking after me 🖤

What I’m less obsessed with is what my foot was doing in that water. If my physio is watching this… please look away 🫣

And before anyone asks, yes, @coach_brazier has already been informed of my recent shenanigans. He was less than impressed 😅 So consider this my official announcement that we’re back on track from today. No more freelancing. Just doing what I’m told for the next 13 days.

Mostly 😇

Big day on the tools and a little bit of progress to show for it 🙌

Back in the pool today and the biggest lesson was this: I’m going to be able to swim. Last week the pain literally took my breath away. Sharp, scary, felt really bad.

Today it was dull and annoying and definitely there, but it was manageable. That’s giving me real hope that whatever’s going on is healing, so my job now is to let it keep healing and not push it too hard.

Also shoutout to @effortlessswimming besties you’ve done it again 💫 ghost goggles for the win!

Followed it up with a little aqua jogging and the ankle felt great. That said, the strapping was coming off so I took it off after the pool, and walking out without it. That was a big eye opener!

That tape is doing a LOT of work. 😳

My ankle is properly unstable right now, so it’s very much proceed with care.

But on a positive note… my cycling has never been better 🚴‍♀️ I’m in excellent bike shape, feeling absolutely jazzed about it and could honestly ride all day.

Two steps forward, one wobbly ankle back. I’ll take it.
