Reposted from @la.progressive.shooters Very humbled to help change the national narrative and conversation on gun ownership.🙏

The surge in new gun owners since 2020 have been disproportionately women, especially Black women, Queer and BIPOC folks and liberal/progressive circles.

It's time to acknowledge we don't all fit the stereotype of what gun ownership looks like and gun rights are for everyone, not just for one end of the political spectrum.

Like correspondent @david_culver points out about stats on new gun owners, 39% voted for Trump and the same number 39% voted for Biden.

There shouldn't be a stigma surrounding lawful and responsible gun ownership.

We will continue to help educate and empower the most vulnerable and marginalized folks to exercise their human right to self defense.

Thanks to @crisiaregalado of @sincolormusic and her wife Yessica for representing our inclusive community and for @cnn for allowing us to be heard and presented in a fair and thoughtful dialogue.

Took my 1st Cumbia Wepa class with @rockin_diedoll in L.A. y she challenged all her students to post a video...

...entonces here is mine.😰 Be kind...totally new to cumbia wepa but I love cumbia so much...

I adore the cumbia sonidera scene en CDMX and love how we don't need a partner with wepa.

Dancing has always been mental health therapy for me and great daily exercise too!

Looking forward to more cumbia classes con Diana @rockin_diedoll ...it's so hard to find someone teaching wepa!

Diana is an amazing teacher based in I.E. who comes out to L.A. to teach, and so encouraging of all her students to not be afraid to move your body with no judgment!💜

What makes this work so fulfilling is seeing clients again when they stop by to say hi on their way to train on their own 💜

She was so scared to even touch a gun when she took our Pistol 101.

Now she's out here on the neighboring bay, investing in membership at the range, training regularly with her own gun.

We love to see people overcome their fears, change the narrative of what responsible gun ownership looks like, as vulnerable folks taking charge of their own self protection and empowerment.💪🏾

What a fun Wed Night Steel Match!🔥

I hadn't shot this match since 2024 and now that it's run by @ohshoot_sc it's very organized and so much better attended.

Got to introduce Val to her 1st competition and shoot together as a team with Rima, our newest instructor.

I think it's important as instructors to keep pushing ourselves in our professional development and push each other to be better.

Great to shoot with @cortney_world_able on our squad and amazing to see Stephanie from @ravenwinglimited 💜

Oh I took a ricochet to the chin too -- it's always a risk when shooting steel targets.

For newbies, minimum distance to shoot steel targets is 15yds for pistols (some say 10yds but I like to err on conservative side) and 90-100yds for rifles.

L..A. honors Ben Caldwell, Father of Leimert Park!💜

On Ben's 81st birthday, the Leimert Park community celebrated the naming of the corner where his @kaosnetworkz community arts space has done so much for the youth & artists, as BEN CALDWELL SQUARE.🎉

Ben was one of the visionary filmmakers of the L.A. Rebellion movement for Black cinema. In the 80s, he created a space to teach Black youth film making, artistic expression & hosting @project.blowed @bananasnetwork open mics, founding Leimert Park Artwalk, co-founding Festival of Masks with @lacommons

I had been coming to Ben's community events at Leimert Park, the cultural heart of Black L.A., for over 15yrs and it wasn't until a conversation with him during the pandemic that he told me he was drafted to the Vietnam War when he was 20.

Up til then, neither of us realized our common connection in history there.

L.A.'s Black community and Boyle Heights Chicano comunidad taught me, a Viet war refigee, that Black & Brown men were disproportionately drafted & sent to the front to kill & die.

Ben told me he felt being drafted as a Black man was like being imprisoned -- he resisted a system trying to program him to dehumanize Vietnamese.

Whenever they ordered him to chant Kill and Hate, he changed the words mentally to Love.

He constantly reminded himself throughout the war he was an Artist, not a Soldier. Malcolm X's autobiography reminded him Black soldiers were disproportionately undereducated, unemployed or working class men being exploited in a war pitting poor colonized, expendable people against each other.

Towards the end of his tour, he and fellow Black soldiers, like Muhammad Ali expressed, had no fight with the Viet Cong, when their own families were fighting against white supremacy & segregation back home.

What saved his life and sanity was getting a camera to shoot instead of his rifle...and taking pictures of his surroundings, especially the children and villagers of the indigenous Montagnards he befriended.

A few years ago, Ben made a healing journey back to Vietnam for the 1st time since the war, connecting with hip hop & artist communities there.

💜 The 1st place I always drop in when I'm back in L.A. is @cafecafemobilecoffee @_macheen_ at @milpakitchen in Boyle Heights.

To check in with the comunidad at this co-op space serving amazing breakfast tacos y premium fair trade coffee.

I'm always running into the homies here like @eddiesalvale of @quitapenasmusic y co-founder of @muchogustofest in its 4th year on Sep. 19th as Inland Empire's grassroots musicfest by the communidad for the comunidad.

IE is so full of musical talent celebrating Afro Latino roots, sounds and cultura from the global diaspora, and rebellious indie music spirit.

I've always been out of the country and missed it but seriously contemplating flying back from Mexico just for this!

I was supposed to return to Mexico after teaching advanced classes Sunday, pero staying for my uncle's funeral this weekend.

So it's a week of catching up on things:

Doctor appointment to go over my annual blood tests: A1C down below prediabetic level but Blood Lead Level (BLL) up.

Shooting a match with my team at Wednesday Night Steel Match at Prado.

Teaching a private lesson for a returning client to renew his Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit.

...and the unglamorous part of teaching firearms is the constant maintenance and upkeep of our equipment.

Our canopies go through lots of wear and tear, so I am always using spare parts from the broken ones to repair the remaining ones.

Especially as we head into Fall, our canopies have to be patched up and leakproof in case of rain.

There are a lot of strays/feral cats in my mom's mobile home park in Orange County. Anyone know any trap and release (TNR) orgs here?🤔
