What makes this work so fulfilling is seeing clients again when they stop by to say hi on their way to train on their own 💜

She was so scared to even touch a gun when she took our Pistol 101.

Now she's out here on the neighboring bay, investing in membership at the range, training regularly with her own gun.

We love to see people overcome their fears, change the narrative of what responsible gun ownership looks like, as vulnerable folks taking charge of their own self protection and empowerment.💪🏾

Our clients also have the coolest shirts!😍

What a fun Wed Night Steel Match!🔥

I hadn't shot this match since 2024 and now that it's run by @ohshoot_sc it's very organized and so much better attended.

Got to introduce Val to her 1st competition and shoot together as a team with Rima, our newest instructor.

I think it's important as instructors to keep pushing ourselves in our professional development and push each other to be better.

Great to shoot with @cortney_world_able on our squad and amazing to see Stephanie from @ravenwinglimited 💜

Oh I took a ricochet to the chin too -- it's always a risk when shooting steel targets.

For newbies, minimum distance to shoot steel targets is 15yds for pistols (some say 10yds but I like to err on conservative side) and 90-100yds for rifles.

I was supposed to return to Mexico after teaching advanced classes Sunday, pero staying for my uncle's funeral this weekend.

So it's a week of catching up on things:

Doctor appointment to go over my annual blood tests: A1C down below prediabetic level but Blood Lead Level (BLL) up.

Shooting a match with my team at Wednesday Night Steel Match at Prado.

Teaching a private lesson for a returning client to renew his Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit.

...and the unglamorous part of teaching firearms is the constant maintenance and upkeep of our equipment.

Our canopies go through lots of wear and tear, so I am always using spare parts from the broken ones to repair the remaining ones.

Especially as we head into Fall, our canopies have to be patched up and leakproof in case of rain.

There are a lot of strays/feral cats in my mom's mobile home park in Orange County. Anyone know any trap and release (TNR) orgs here?🤔

Awesome group of folks yesterday for back-to-back Pistol 201 Speed & Performance and Pistol 301 Run & Gun!☀️🙌

Wonderful reunion with @bananapanclocks Day 1 client from 2021 who used to drive all the way from Oceanside, and flew into L.A. on the way back to Ohio to take our advanced classes!

Next advanced classes:
Pistol 201 & 202 Red Dot SAT OCT 3 (open to all)
Pistol 301 SUN OCT 4 (returning clients only)

One of my favorite drills for teaching people new to shooting on the move is @timherronshooting Barrel Drill.

There's so much to what looks like a deceptively simple drill:

Moving laterally across 2 barriers, you must shoot 1 shot at each of 3 targets from each of 3 positions.

But that's not all! For peak efficiency in movement, all splits must be within 0.10 seconds of each other.

Which means your transitions crossing the barriers once you've shot the last target in one position to shooting your next target at the next position should be same tempo as the entire course of fire.

Only A zone hits count.🫠

Frustrating but Fun.🙃

The homies @ravenwinglimited host @timherronshooting 2 Day Practical Performance every year in L.A.. You shouldn't miss it if you are serious about making huge gains in your pistol skills: Oct. 31-Nov. 1 and I signed up for Nov. 2-3 almost sold out.

What students don't see behind the scenes: Us being human too, not afraid to make mistakes and having fun with the process 😅

So it was a 100 degree day, trying to keep my phone covered from overheating in the sun, and getting some quick drills in after teaching.

A really great assessment of our skills and what we need to work on is doing a drill from either a cold start, no warm-up, and/or when exhausted, like we were after teaching in the heat wave.

A fun drill is to shoot 5 shots at 5 yards at a poker card or 3x5 card in under 5 seconds.

In just 5 shots, we can test how fast is the draw to 1st shot, and how consistently our grip pressures are on the gun shooting as soon as we can on a small target without overconfirming sights.

Remember it's not about perfection...it's about progress.

It's about not being afraid to make mistakes because you will learn more about yourself when you push yourself to failure.

You won't know the limits of your ability and push beyond them if you never push yourself outside your comfort zone.

It's about what you're learning and analyzing from your performance without judgment.

It's collecting data to keep pushing for efficiency and improvement.

And never forget to have fun with it!

Putting in Dry Fire practice on a 100 degree day after being exhausted from teaching 💪

Building good habits takes discipline and lots of repetitive, some say boring reps.

But that's what makes a competent shooter -- all the unglamorous dry practice that doesn't look flashy enough for the Gram.🤷‍♂️

Plus, each one, teach one.

First and foremost, we love coaching and mentoring not just our students, but each other as well.

Common threads with many of my mentors in the gun world are we're educators and we've been involved in some type of physical discipline, like martial arts, professional competitive sports or music.

That constant refinement of a physical craft, and hand, eye, mind, body connection, and being a human-machine interface.

Val is a BJJ teacher and I am a former surf instructor. We know what it's like to help the most scared folks do something outside their comfort zone.

We remember what it's like to be that newbie and we stay humble, always striving for Progress, not Perfection.

Video is a great tool to analyze inefficiencies we don't notice we're doing.

Prepping Val to shoot her 1st competition soon, so helping smooth out common holster draw inefficiencies I had too when I started like unecessary upper body movement and tilting the head down to the sights.

If your trainer isn't constantly working on their own development, or they think they know it all, then what are they really teaching you?
