POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
«Across these terrains — Lesotho, Lebanon, Bolivia, Kashmir, the Golan Heights, the UAE, and the other chronicles presented in the exhibition — we see winter sports not as Alpine or Scandinavian traditions only, but as globally mobile practices, continually transforming and acquiring new meanings across continents, cultures, and social classes. Their diffusion is neither linear nor uniform: at times it takes the form of mimicry, at others cultural hybridisation, and elsewhere acts of reclamation or reparation. In certain contexts, the mountain becomes more than a site of leisure or sport — it is a stage upon which gendered, religious, or other identitarian forms of resistance and emancipation are asserted. Here, winter sports manifest not only as geographically mobile, but continually renegotiated through questions of visibility, inclusion, and representation, taking shape in ways as diverse as the latitudes they span.»

Extract from “Winters Elsewhere”, a curatorial exploration of the “microhistories of snow” and how they can reshape our understanding of winter cultures, written by @eri.pet for the 7th issue of @hardpackmagazine, edited by @zachseely.

Published months after the closing of the exhibition “Fuoripista. Art, Sport and Winter” hosted at @gres_art_671, the text explores the “unbeaten” territories of winter sports — but are they really? — with a view to broadening their cultural and emotional horizon.

RCA - MA Architecture 2026 / 2027 ADS7
SPORT STORIES: LIMINAL GROUNDS
•
Sport continuously oscillates between discipline and emancipation, exclusion and solidarity, classification and experimentation, nationalism and transnationalism, spectacle and everyday appropriation, extraction and resistance. These tensions play out across radically different spatial scales, from the body and its immediate apparatuses to the field of play, to the stadium, the large infrastructures of the city and the nation. Sport can inhabit some of the most expensive and politically charged architectures on earth, yet it can also begin with almost nothing: a line drawn on the ground, an improvised goal, an empty lot temporarily transformed by play.

This year, ADS8 will explore the spatial manifestations of sport as they emerge across liminal conditions—cultural, urban, environmental, and technological—positioning sport as a site of contestation and possibility, where identity, body, culture, and space are negotiated, and where new possibilities for public life can be imagined and tested.

WORKSHOP SEASON 2026 | Scrap-Kammer: A Cabinet of Curiosities

In this workshop, participants explored the taxonomy of the Scrap-Kammer, treating discarded materials and production leftovers as valuable resources rather than waste. By collecting, classifying, and assembling fragments found across Boisbuchet, they designed and built a contemporary cabinet of curiosities that functioned as both an archive and a working device. The workshop invited participants to investigate architecture as an operational framework rather than a finished object: a device that recorded processes, hosted residues, and revealed the intelligence of making.

Founded in Milan back in 2020 out of the need to make sense of the complexity of the world we live in, 2050+ builds new narratives by working across spatial practices, curatorial research, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Architect, curator and founder of 2050+ Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, together with curator and studio partner Erica Petrillo, told us what it means to be part of a young practice that dissolves the boundaries between disciplines, shaping a rich, unique language of the present.

Led by Andrea Bagnato, Erica Petrillo and Luca Gerry Conte, with a live contribution from Bogotá by Antonio Bermudez Obregon, the urban walk moved through the streets of Genoa, stopping at places, monuments and references connected to the city’s colonial history.

Starting from Piazza Acquaverde, participants were invited to look at the urban landscape through themes such as Christopher Columbus, maritime trade, slavery and the role of financial institutions.

For this month’s brave now, Curator-in-Residence Kate Wong invites curator Erica Petrillo, who brings together the practices of Francesca Pionati, M Lissoni, and Antonio Bermúdez-Obregón through the idea of “casa”, an Italian word that describes both the architectural structure in which one lives and the social and cultural infrastructure through which belonging is produced.

“Exploring practices and conceptualisations around “casa” (a term that combines the English notions of “home” and “house”) is something that has preoccupied me for quite some time now. We need it more than ever: to feel that we belong, but in a way that remains open to porosity rather than organised around exclusion. In a way that is analytical without being deprived of symbols, rituals, politics and poetry. In a way that cuts across scales — ecological and planetary, while still grounded in the domestic and urban realities we inhabit every day.”

Erica Petrillo is a curator with a background in political philosophy and social sciences. A partner at architecture studio 2050+ (Milan), she has curated projects across architecture, contemporary art, and research-based practice, including exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Triennale Milano, BASE Milan, and the ADI Museum. A former MoMA R&D Fellow, she currently teaches at IED Milan and, together with 2050+, co-runs ADS8 – Sport Stories at the Royal College of Art in London.
